"I...I thought we were still dueling. I'm sorry!" Lily's voice shot up another octave as she hurried across the room to where she'd flung her friend with such little grace. Oh god...why had she thought this was a good idea as she listened to him curse and watched him grimace. Stopping just short she sighed, looking him over slowly as if to make sure she hadn't done anything too bad before she moved in a little closer, kneeling beside him.
When he tilted his head down her hand went there, tangling in black strands as she felt gently, "I'm so, so, so bloody sorry Sev. I didn't know why I thought that was a good idea." Gentle fingers felt for bumps and blood as she let out another long sigh. "I wasn't thinking. I just...well I did think, but the thought wasn't exactly brilliant now was it?" She tried to smile, hoping that maybe he wasn't too angry at her.
Looking up her gaze followed him as he stood, she remained kneeling though, sitting back on her knees a little in the afternoon sun pouring into the room. Slowly she stood, not moving away from him yet as her smile turned sheepish, "Well the last professor taught me that one. Said that I'd have better luck hitting something bigger then a wand. Maybe I should just stick to charms making." Putting away her wand for a moment she moved a little closer.
Now to handle the manner of the invite really that is if it still stood. It struck her as curious, of the other dances and parties usually she was with friends, and that was if she went, but something private like this...it made her wonder why her friend would invite her to go with him. They would see each other there, but what about dates? Had he not wanted one in reality? Or was this perhaps a bit of pity watching her flounder around in her efforts to prove herself good with defense?
"About the dance Sev..." she began, fiddling with the edge of her vest, "If you're not too sore at me does that invite still stand?" She tried her best to chuckle, laugh it off if he pulls it back, but the thought of that made her stomach grown a little tight into a knot. "You don't have to if you have someone else you'd rather invite, but I mean we're both going right? It could be fun...so if you're still offering I'd really like to go with you."
It was strange to feel so nervous about something like this, it was just a dance as friends, support to one another for the party with its duels. It would be more than pleasant to have someone like that with her then wait for more boys to try to invite themselves.

He had frozen momentarily when she came to him, running fingers through his hair with feathery touch. "It's okay." He murmured, "Really.." Turning his head oh so slightly in her direction, he watched the different expressions cloud her face as she inspected him. There wasn't any serious damage done, after-all he had just fallen backwards.Sure it hurt, but Severus wasn't very sensitive to this kind of pain. He had hit (and been hit) his head plenty of times to ease through it with little more than grit teeth and a hiss of discomfort. Still..he couldn't deny the warmth that had burgeoned in his chest as she fussed over him. It wasn't something he had seen much of, this concern that she seemed to have for him, and he greedily took what she offered and kept it close to him.
"Well you seemed to be fully capable of using that spell." Severus said as she pulled away and he stood, a wry smile tugged at the corners of his lips, "I don't see what you were worried about, keep putting that kind of intensity into your spells and you'll have knocked all the competitors out. In fact, maybe next time you should try that on Potter." Despite the mention of the messy-haired boy, Severus' face did not turn into a scowl. He almost seemed amused, if not rather disoriented. He reached a slender hand behind him to pat lightly at the back of his head, wincing, if only momentarily.
His dark eyes regarded her, still kneeling on the stone floor, watching as she rose to her feet. "I don't know..." He offered, pulling his hand back to inspect it, "You seemed to know what you were doing with that, only...generally in a regulated duel it's clear when the duel has been paused. You lose when you have been disarmed I do believe." He gave her a pointed look, but there was mirth in his eyes. "It doesn't do to be overeager." But he was lightly jabbing her only in jest. This had certainly done it's job in distracting her from the fact he had actually invited her to the dance.
And yet. It hadn't. He froze as she began to speak, her voice sound cautious as though she were deliberately trying to tread lightly. Severus' face clouded for a moment, sure that she was about to reject him. What was the point of going as friends if they were already going to see each other at the party, right? So what if she hadn't invited anyone yet, she probably just wanted to leave her options open.
Tension ebbed from his frame as she continued to speak, replaced by a kind of cynic curiosity, "...That is....if you'd like to go." He found himself saying slowly. The idea that there was someone else he'd rather invite was so absurd that he dismissed it impatiently, not honoring it with any sort of address.
And suddenly he was extremely nervous, she had agreed, she had said yes. It was an answer he hadn't expected and therefore brought up a entire new set of concerns. What would her friends say about it? What would his housemates do.....Severus was fairly sure there would some sort of backlash, hopefully completely directed at him, his Slytherin acquaintances were not encouraging of their friendship, much less if they were to show up to the dance together. And Severus knew that they had much more up their sleeves than the silly tricks and pranks that Potter did.
Furthermore...what was he going to wear?

"Nothing seems to be too badly bruised. I could still take you to the infirmary though if you think I might have gotten a bit too rough." She let go of Sev once he stood up, from this spot he towered literally until she began to get to her feet. Brushing herself off she sighed, "I had to do something worthwhile...I guess I got too eager though. It was stupid. I'm not that good at it, though using it on Potter would be funny if I got that far." She'd really like nothing more than showing off and making a fool out of the cocky toerag.
However she felt the fool at that moment as Sev brought up the rules of dueling. Her face turned a bright crimson, nearly as dark as her hair as she looked away, "I forgot...I don't do this that often, and you...you came up at me with your own wand and I thought..." It had been quite a shock to have the wand at her throat, to have him there almost threatening her. Was he capable of that? Would he ever be? Was that something he'd gained from his friendship with those Death Eaters. It had surprised her that the quiet studious boy had that potential. Though she quickly fell quiet about it. No, he'd never hurt her. They were friends, "I thought the game was still on. I'm sorry." Her blush cooled only a little as the dance was still discussed.
"Well of course Sev. I mean it's better to go with someone you like then just ask someone randomly right?" She smiled, scratching her head as she straightened up, "That does mean we may have to duel each other. Are you okay with that?" The question slipped out just as she realized that.
They would have to go against each other, but she didn't feel too much competition or qualms about it. She knew he was probably the better duelist, and if they somehow got the chance to face each other it would be something interesting to experience. Really though Lily would just be happy having him escort her at the dance. It took a lot of pressure off of her, and she knew that when it came to spending time with Sev they always had fun in one way or another.
The invite had surprised her, but she was pleased to have it. Very pleased in fact. She knew she'd have to explain to the other girls once they began to buzz about who it was she would invite, but now it just seemed like such a far off thought as she beamed a smile at him, "We'll have fun though. We can eat, and dance...no pressure. Just a relaxing night. I'm glad you asked Sev. However I guess now that is out of the way I should try to focus on getting this dueling thing down shouldn't I? Or more heads may be hurt." She joked lightly, laughing as it filled the empty room around them.

And odd kind of sensation had passed through Severus after Lily had agreed and once they had begun talking particulars. Her accepting his invitation hadn't sunk in quite yet, but it had elicited a new sort of fervor in the boy and judging by the spark in his obsidian eyes he was pleased with the outcome.
Sure there was much to worry about, but somehow all of it seemed to be quite distant to him now as he watched her, not really hearing her as she talked. It wasn't as though he didn't care about what she was saying, only that he was having a hard time focusing while he had begun to go over the details of everything in his analytic mind.
Even though he knew she was referring to the fact that they had known each other for the better part of seven years when she mentioned she'd rather go with someone she 'liked', it had not failed to make him feel unusually warm from the inside out.
He didn't even hear her question about dueling each other.
Not many people liked him really, and he was not completely innocent. Severus was a person who was highly mistrustful and wary of others, he didn't like being around a lot of people at once and he had a rather odd and sometimes even dark sense of humor that required the right sort of person to appreciate. Lily knew him too well to really take any of his barbed sarcasm to heart, but it wasn't the most attractive quality he possessed. However it was just his way and despite all this he had never been truly cruel to her. Even last year when that cursed word had slipped out of his mouth, it had been an instinctive, fumbling sort of thing borne out of frustration and humiliation never intended for her. Yet it had been a sobering realization of how far he had fallen, if that particular word would be the first to come to his mind.
Disgusted with himself, he quickly turned his thoughts to something happier. Lily Evans had agreed to go to the dance with him. A bemused, fond sort of expression that was not quite a smirk, but not as open as a smile crossed his face as he regarded her.
"Lets." He agreed, brandishing his wand with flourish and taking several steps backward, "We have much to work on." There was a slight teasing undertone to his otherwise level voice.
And so Severus worked with Lily, practicing different jinxes, curses and defensive measures until the sun began to hang heavily in the sky, which had turned thick and hazy, warm and dripping honey- like gold. They gathered their things, talking about the their progress and who was going with who to the dance as they made their way toward the Great Hall for dinner.
