The petite girl was perched in one of the trees near the lake, legs dangling over one side as she leaned closer and closer to a cluster of leaves. They were all in hues of yellow and reds now, clinging to the tree with the rest of their strength. Indica knew that they would soon fall to join their friends down in the grass...but she'd wanted to see the vibrant colours up close. She found that once they let go of the tree and began their elegant fall to the ground, they began to dull.
It being a weekend, she was wearing pants and a sweater rather than the school uniform. And truthfully, pants were much better for climbing trees than skirts. The robes usually got in the way as well, therefore this was the best sort of dress for her outdoor adventures.
Indica's nose was nearly touching one of the leaves when the branch she was sitting on gave a loud crack and caused the girl to lose her balance.
And so she ended up clinging to the branch with her little fingers, rather than seated on it. Her grey eyes were wide and she hung there. The ground wasn't too far below, but she could easily break her ankle if she didn't fall just right. She knew she needed to let go before the branch broke from the tree completely, but she found that her hands wouldn't do as he brain ordered,
"Let go...let go...common Indica..."
The girl squeezed her eyes shut and tried to keep calm. She would let go on the count of three.
One...
Two...
No! She just couldn't do it...

It was a weekend and therefore Alastair was not dressed in his school uniform. He was wearing muggle clothes, a pair of jeans, navy shirt and a jacket that looked fairly new. It was chilly outside, so he had thrown his Slytherin scarf around his neck before heading out onto the grounds. Alas didn't wear muggle clothes often, disliking the looks he got from his housemates when he did, but did not really understand the reasoning behind disliking them. Sure, he felt much more comfortable in wizarding clothes, and found them to be far more practical, but having had grown up with a muggle father, he held no animosity towards his own clothes.
Then again, sometimes (often) he found himself wishing he was pureblooded, feeling as though everything would be so much easier. Alastair loved his family, but sometimes he felt so disconnected from the wizarding world and who he was at home that he counted down the days of summer, longing to return to Hogwarts. He envied his housemates who lived in magic families, in wizarding villages with wizarding houses. All summer with no magic and no Hogwarts, it made him ache just to think about it.
He was walking down the gentle slope of the grounds, enjoying the blaze of colors in the trees and the crisp, autumn smell in the air. This was probably his favorite time of year. He did not notice the girl in the tree as he passed under it, not untill there was a loud crack and Alastair's dueling reflexes kicked in. He whipped around, hand on his wand, practically crouched in a defensive position, but he was not faced with an attacker. He was staring at a pair of shoes, curiously he leaned back, to locate the owner of said pair of shoes and found himself looking up at a blonde girl who seemed rather terrified.
"Need some help?" Alastair said, raising his wand and casting a featherweight charm on her before she had time to answer, "Drop down and I'll catch you." The brunette called up, holding out his arms.

She'd squeezed her eyes shut and was trying to breathe normally when she heard a voice from below. Her eyelids snapped up, and she stared down at the boy. She must have been too caught up in her situation to hear him approach. Some dangerous creature could have come along and started snapping at her ankles....and she wouldn't have known until it was upon her! What a frightening thought. Indica absently made note to pay more attention during her next crisis.
Indica was very glad now that she'd opted for wearing pants made of stretchy cotton, rather than a skirt. She would have likely frozen up from embarrassment, let go of the branch and broken and ankle or some other part of her leg/s.
The boy asked if she needed help, and before she could answer he cast a spell on her. The Ravenclaw blinked, looked him over for a moment, then took a deep breath and uncurled her fingers. The rational side of her brain had said that the boy's spell had worked and that she would be safe, yet she'd still been afraid and pumped full of adrenaline.
Luckily she'd convinced herself to let go of the branch, stopping the situation from becoming any more embarrassing.
This boy was going to catch her. Indica couldn't help but feel respect for him...stopping to help a stranger the way he was. It never occurred to her that he might be saving her from the tree just so he could bully or hurt her in some way. She was rather naive when it came to matters like this involving herself.

Alastair hadn't thought to ask the girl if it was okay to cast the charm on her. It made perfect sense to him, Alas never hesitated to use magic in any situation after all.
Only once he had caught her, easily when she was placed under the featherweight charm, he was able to get a good look at the girl. She was tiny, and it wasn't just the fact that she barely weighed anything in his arms, she was willowy and narrow. Almost elfen and sprite-like, Alastair found himself staring at her, taking her in and wondering if he had seen her before. Hogwarts was not a large school, and he would have remembered someone so distinct looking.
"Are you okay?" He asked concern lacing his voice, brows knitting as he surreptitiously checked her over.
Alastair was not the most social of people, so it was not completely unbelievable that he would not know her. Especially if she was in a different house than his own. Despite being a half blood Alastair had done well in Slytherin. People knew he was intelligent and he had bested the majority of them at dueling. Slytherin's tended to respect power.
"Did you fall?"

She fell right into the boy's arms with ease, closing her eyes for a moment, or two, before blinking up at him. Indica hadn't really noticed while panicking up in the tree, but now that she'd been saved and her heartbeat was starting to slow...she saw that he was quite handsome. A hint of colour rose to her cheeks and she cleared her throat.
The girl then smiled, the warmth of it reaching the desolate colour of her eyes. She looked at her hands, "Thank you! I only have some scrapes..."
Indica looked up at the branch she'd had to let go of, "I hope it doesn't fall..." her attention then went back to the boy, "Mhm...the branch sort of jerked under me as it started to break...and I lost my balance." Gently she wiped her hands onto her own shirt, getting the bits off bark off the reddened skin.
She knew that she ought to ask him to put her down, but considering the situation, Indica simply couldn't bring herself to. Besides, she wasn't some prude. Sure he'd made her blush, but she wasn't under the impression that boys had "cooties" or that any boy who dared touch her was only doing so in order to remove her clothes.

Alastair was relieved that she was unhurt and he relaxed, the tension smoothing out of his face. "Why on earth were you up in that tree in the first place?" It sounded just like something Devon would do. When they had been small children Devon had been the adventurous brother no contest. He had often skirted up trees as easily as a cat leaving Alastair to berate him for being so careless. Devon would have never understood the rush of panic that Alas had felt knowing that at any moment, with the slightest slip something awful could have happened. With the advent of healing spells Alas was wont to feel slightly more secure about his brother, but it was hard to quell those protective feelings even now that they were both fifteen.
Upon the realization that the girl was still tucked in his arms he flushed lightly, a ribbon of color dusted across his features, "Oh I'm sorry..." He murmured placing her back on the ground and taking off the charm lest she simply blow away in the wind.
He heard an odd sound and immediately, as though it had heard her previous sentiments, the branch fell off with a sharp crack. Alastair had only seconds to react, but his reflexes were almost feline. His hand shot out, grabbing her around the wrist and pulling her towards him as the heavy limb crashed to the ground.
They were even closer this time and somewhere in the back of his mind Alas knew that he was probably making an awful first impression. Blinking owlishly, literal centimeters from her wide eyes he felt himself get hot all over in discomfort. Why was he always so strange around cute girls?! It was utterly maddening for someone like Alastair who was considered to be a fairly level headed, intelligent boy.
"Second time in one day.." He murmured, stepping back and laughing, the laugh sounding strange even to his own ears, "Trouble must follow you."

What had she been doing in the tree? Indica thought back, and her cheeks warmed again as she remembered. She was proud of her interest in plants, of her excellent grades in Herbology...but there were few who understood this passion of hers. The girl didn't want to scare off a potential friend due to coming off as a geek...but at the same time she didn't want to lie.
Her teeth pressed into her lower lip, and she looked a little amused as he finally set her down, then removed the charm from her. Indica was both relieved and disappointed. Sure, being blown away by the wind would have been unfortunate...but at the same time...she would have enjoyed the feel of weightlessness as the breeze carried her off.
Indica sometimes wished to just be carried off...find a new life somewhere. She'd disappointed her family by being sorted into Ravenclaw rather than Slytherin, she hadn't entered the proper house like her cousins Chord and Anastasiya. And Indica feared that she would only continue doing the opposite of what was expected of her. Sometimes she wished to throw her worries to her wind, and then herself as well....Flying in that sense would be different from the flying one could do with the aid of a broom, would it not?
Her attention returned to the situation when she heard the loud crack. Just as she'd been fearing only a moment earlier, the branch detached from the tree and fell toward them.
And the boy saved her yet again! Then she realized that he'd pulled her close...and just how close. Indica gave a small gasp before she could stop herself, large gray eyes widening as she looked at him. 'Second time in one day...'
The Ravenclaw swallowed as he stepped away, then nodded, "Ah...yes..." the new dose of adrenaline making its way through her system was making it difficult to think, "I owe you double now!" She bit her lip just like before, and looked behind her to see the branch where it'd crashed onto the grass.
If it'd hit her head just right, it could have killed her. Indica did indeed owe him, "How should I repay you?"

"Repay me?" He questioned, tilting his head slightly. It wasn't as though he had really done anything that spectacular, she would have gotten conked on the head by that branch if his reflexes hadn't been what they were.
"Well...." He said, offering the girl a faint smile, "I guess you could tell me your name."
It really was rather extraordinary circumstances after-all, one didn't meet girls hanging out of trees very often. He wasn't sure what to say to the girl, seeing as he had never had many friend girls before and the only ones that he knew were either insane or completely materialistic and shallow.
Alastair was very intelligent and he liked to talk about intelligent things, most of the girls he knew only talked about clothes and make-up and boys. Definitely not people he had much in common with. However Alas found this girl to be incredibly interesting and he suddenly had the urge to not come off as the bookish intellectual he actually was.
Hardly anyone he met was ever impressed by that.
"I'm Alastair Redwood." He said, "What year are you?"

She genuinely wanted to pay him back, but she couldn't help hoping that he wasn't the type of person who would take advantage of someone like her. Did he know that she came from a wealthy family? And was that why he'd saved her twice in a row? Being who she was, it was difficult not to think that way sometimes, but Indica really tried to keep her mind as judgment-free as possible.
Her name? That was all he wanted? Indica relaxed a little and gave him a soft smile.
If she'd known that they were both trying to hide the fact that they were bookish and smart, Indica would have laughed aloud. As it were, she was only aware of herself trying to keep it hidden. He would surely find her strange or boring, or both, if he knew that she often had her nose pressed to a plant or a book...
"I'm Indica d'Antoine. And I'm a fifth year. You?"
Although her name was French, there was absolutely no accent in her speech, as she'd been born and raised in England.

And suddenly he realized he had seen her before, just hadn't paid much attention. Feeling rather abashed at himself, for being so unobservant. He hadn't paid much attention, because honestly he tended not to focus on people from other houses, sunk deep in his own determined way of going about his classes. "I know you." He said, "I'm a fifth year too...we have Herbology together."
The Slytherins and Ravenclaws had Herbology together, while Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors took the class at the same time. That was where he remembered her from most of all, "Professor Sprout favors you." He mused, "She said you were a natural." Now that he could remember he felt even worse about not recognizing her.
Understanding suddenly lit up in his dark blue gaze, "I know why you were in the tree now." He grinned, suddenly feeling as though he understood her better, "You were observing something weren't you?"
He took in the scraped up state of her clothes, she looked like she had fallen in a hedge. There were twigs and branches stuck to her clothes and hair. Without asking, Alastair stepped forward, plucking a leaf from her mass of blonde hair and holding it up to the light, admiring the sun illuminating the soft pattern of veins. "I bet you can tell me exactly what kind of tree this is."
