In the late afternoons many students were still out and about the school. Some at the library studying, others out at the fields watching practice for whatever Quidditch team had the time that day. Many first years still seemed so fascinated that many often would just wander around the school till meal time. Lily remembered her own first year, unable to really sit still long enough and not go searching about, even after hours if she was quiet and quick about it so as not to get caught. So usually the common room was fairly quiet this time of the day, and that was what the prefect preferred.
Across the sturdy road oak table she had scrolls stretched out, writing leisurely as she flipped through the books she had out. Even with classes having just started she was already quite busy with school work, if anything just simply preparing for the exams and such. While others waited till the evening Lily preferred getting most of her studying done early so that she could relax after dinner and not worry about spending long hours awake worried. Though she'd begun to spend less time in the library, and more time in the House common room simply because she worried of the people she might run into and have to deal with. In the empty room she gave a small sigh, looking out the window at the gray day, the sky darkening slowly.
The work was almost done, and soon students would be filing down to the great hall. Closing up a few of her books she just let her mind wander a bit as she stared across the table at the fireplace, the warm flames crackling brightly, making the room comfortably warm as she removed her robes and set it over the back of her chair before settling back a little more leaving the last of her studies for later as she unburied one of her novels and began to flip through it curled up in the overstuffed chair.

The day was nice sure. But too much sun wasn't good either. James was learning this the hard way on this day, as he'd had to return to the dorms, claiming a stomach ache. Truth was that he'd spent the day in the sun --causing mischief of course-- and well...sunlight and pitch-black hair were not a good combination.
He'd gotten a headache and gotten a little dizzy. But rather than admitting this to his friends, he'd claimed a stomach ache and headed back to Gryffindor tower. The usually cocky boy had crawled under the covers and stuffed his head under the pillow.
----
Three hours later he woke and burst from the covers, glasses askew --as he'd forgotten to remove them-- hair more of a mess than usual. His head barely ached at all, and he found himself grinning from ear to ear. James Potter was back in the game!
Quite pleased with this development, the Gryffindor bounded down the stairs planning on going out and finding the other Marauders. The headache from earlier was almost forgotten.
He was almost at the bottom of the stairs, close to stepping on the carpeted floor of the common room when he noticed a familiar shade of red. Well it was more of an orange really, but who cared. James' day had just gotten a lot better!
Lily seemed pretty absorbed in what she was doing, first putting some things away, then engrossing herself in some --likely boring-- book. James wrinkled his nose for a moment, then smirked as he decided to take it upon himself to make her day a little less boring.
With a bounce in his step, he approached the couch she was curled up on from behind. The athletic boy then placed a hand on the back of the couch, and leaped over and onto the cushions, right beside Lily. He managed to land exactly in the position he'd intended, a position that exuded ease and confidence,
"Evans! Why aren't you enjoying the nice weather? Hmm?" He'd managed to land with one arm draped over the back of the couch, Perfect. It was exactly the impression he'd wanted to make! Maybe that headache earlier was no paying off somehow.

Lily couldn't resist fantasy and science fiction novels. Maybe it was the muggle she was raised as for the first nine years of her life, but she devoured the books her parents sent her, rereading them again and again before hiding them away in the bottom of her trunk. She really didn't want to catch any flack for loving them so much, as already she knew a great deal of what was written there was not true for many books that talked about magic. Still it reminded her of the days her father would read to her and her sister, before magic was in all her classes, before her family began to look to her to tell stories of school and learning the very things they read about.
Flipping through a few pages of her novel she really wasn't listening for anyone else to come through the commons area. It was nice to have the time alone, after such a frustrating summer now school was almost nice to be back at even if it was filled with home-
The ripple of force from the body landing beside her pushed at the springs, and for a moment sent her jumping up just a little bit as they rattled. Uncurling her legs from under her one went down to brace her body as her hand went to keep her skirt in place in case she got too jostled. The place in her book was now lost as the pages fluttered shut, her other hand gripping it as her head whipped around to look at the person who had so rudely crashed (and she meant that literally) into her quiet time.
Green eyes really didn't seem to show surprise when she spied Potter lounging on the couch next to her. Really they didn't show much reaction to the boy at all as a hand came up to push back wild red strands that had fallen into her eyes.
"Potter...well if you'd look outside you'd see that the sun has turned to clouds, and if you look here in my hand," She held up her book, waving it in front of him, "You'd find that I was busy reading...happily I might add." She huffed, setting the book back down as she smoothed out her skirt.
"Shouldn't you be out running amok with your little gang of hoodlums? A little early for you to be inside doing something like studying isn't it?" A smirk quirked the edge of pink lips as she leaned in a bit, meeting the boy's gaze with her own wondering what excuse would come from his mouth today..

When she mentioned the weather, James' brows drew together and he looked out of the window nearest to them. Well bloody hell, she was right. Blasted headache had made him miss out on all the sun. Of course he was completely disregarding that fact that it had been the sun that'd given him the headache in the first place.
On a whim, he decided to not talk about the weather at all, "How could anyone be happy about reading, Evans? It just doesn't make sense." He thought of Remus and nearly laughed aloud. His friend would likely side with Evans on this one...
The boy then gave a slight snort, "And I wasn't studying...I was actually enjoying a rather rewarding nap." If he wasn't going to admit getting heat exhaustion to his friends, there was no way in hell he'd expose such a weakness to Lily Evans. No sir.
He stretched a little and got more comfortable. James had noticed that Lily lost her page number when he'd jumped on the couch, and he'd felt a little bad at first. But then he'd come to the conclusion that it was all for the best really. He'd saved her from boredom now while he was talking to her, and when they split ways, she'd be less likely to try searching for the page she'd lost.
I mean, why bother? He surely wouldn't. Unless it was for a really really important exam or something. Maybe.
Although he already had bed-head, James ran a hand through the mess out of habit, looking the red-head over with interested he didn't bother concealing. She'd leaned in while asking him about studying, making her presence all the more tempting. James was glad he had decent self control, or he'd have likely made a fool of himself and earned a slap.
He rubbed the bridge of his nose, "You going to Hogsmeade this weekend, Evans?"

Lily resisted smirking when Potter looked to see the weather outside. It had been nice earlier, but now it looked as if any other Quidditch might have to wait. Sooner or later students would probably start towards her, but now she was left alone...or rather alone with Potter. It seemed he was determined to make sure she wouldn't get back to her book for now as she gave up trying to find the page and simply let it lay closed against her thigh. Maybe she'd just catch up on it tonight in bed while the other girls busied themselves down here after dinner.
"You know a person doesn't have to be up to something to be having fun? A book is a very nice way to relax after school work. A nice novel, a cloudy day. I prefer it really." What she preferred at this moment was to be left in peace, but that seemed a far cry of a chance, and already she'd relinquished the time to this now. Part of her wondered how Remus could stand it and still get the grades to pass. "Have you ever even sat down once to read something that isn't homework?" She asked, almost sincerely as she stood, setting her novel aside as she went to go pick up her homework mess.
Didn't really want to leave it out here too long if more people came. Or leave her work out as some students were prone to copying if allowed. As she put her things back into her satchel back she head Potter talking about sleeping. "Sounds boring to me I think. Just sleep the hours away...you'd get nothing done." She gave a small tilt of her head as she leaned against the table pushing the last of her things away into her bag.
When Potter inquired about Hogsmeade she turned to watch him uselessly brush his hair with fingers. Giving a small sigh as she examined the front cover of a book she'd seen a millions times,
"Hogsmeade this weekend?" She repeated softly. There were a few girls going, eager to get some sweets and just out of the school in general. Lily had been thinking about going with her friends but she just gave a small shrug now, "Depends really...if there is anything in Hogsmeade that I need or want. So maybe." With her bag all packed up she started towards the couch to gather her book, not too keen on losing it before she'd finished it.
"Why do you want to know Potter?" She asked, moving to grab the last of her things.

He wasn't going to have a debate with her about books. James would never see things the way she did, in that regard anyway, therefore there was no point in arguing with her. Besides, he wanted to score points, not lose them by disagreeing with her. Therefore he simply dropped the subject, just like that.
James like girls sure; he liked the attention they gave him, he liked the feel of them, the smell, the taste. But he would never change his opinions, ideals or morals for one. Not even Lily Evans.
"Sometimes...one should take a break and do nothing. In my opinion anyhow. Being active is great...but breaks are fantastic."
His lips twisted into a confident smirk, "Have you ever sat or lain there and done nothing?" She probably hadn't.
"Don't act as if you don't know," his tone was playful, "You should come and meet me at The Three Broomsticks." His brows rose and he tried to appear as harmless and innocent as possible, without much success, "You never know...I might just sweep you off your feet." James winked and continued to lounge there, seeming to patiently be awaiting her response.

As much as she disliked what he said...and as bothersome as it was to admit that Potter was right, he was. Sometimes it was nice to do nothing. However for her she enjoyed her books, and sometimes the occasional moments she'd get alone to listen to her records in her room and dance about with no risk of another witch seeing her belting out whatever her mum has sent her that month. Of course she had been caught her first few years by Prefects, but mostly they were fascinated by the music, some of it she'd never been able to find except from other muggle-born wizards or witches.
"I have Potter. I still do. The meditation is nice and peaceful, but when there are things to do I like to get them done so they don't weigh in when I do nothing. In fact it's how I spent parts of my summer." With no Sev she'd spent hours in the morning just laying in bed caught between sleep and awake, occasionally reading, Studying too her mind off of things. Sometimes going to the park and tangling herself so far up in the swings until she released them and spun until she was so dizzy that the world didn't stop spinning after she did. But mostly nothing if her thoughts didn't get the best of her.
Like Potter had guessed Lily had figured why he was asking, but still as he invited her out she found herself pausing as if she really did consider the offer. Really she just sighed and shook her head, pocketing her novel in her bag once more.
"Potter, the one thing I doubt you lack is company to invite for drinks. You have your pick of almost any girl, so perhaps you should ask those vying for you attentions first if you're looking to sweep feet from floors." She leaned forward a bit over the couch, meeting his gaze behind the glasses for a moment before she smiled sweetly slowly pulling back. "Besides, don't you travel in your usual quartet with Black, Lupin, and Pettigrew on these trips? I'm sure they would keep you company as well."
A date with Potter was not something that weighed to heavily on her mind when making her decision. However where some boys took a no as a no, it seemed that he always found a way around it. She had to admit it was admirable to see someone so determined, who kept fighting, even if it was bothersome.

He found it quite difficult to picture Lily Evans relaxing somewhere, doing nothing, without a book pressed to her nose. She and Snivellus were so similar in that regard...Maybe that's why some of his antifans insisted that Lily and Severus were a good match. Were those antifans really not mad after all?
Naw. They were mad for disliking James Potters, first of all, and even more made for thinking that Snivellus would ever deserve a pretty, intelligent girl like Lily. Their appearances would clash completely anyway, making him think of a tale he'd once heard about a beauty and a beast. Seeing them together as a couple...well it would be quite comical.
His brows rose when Lily actually appeared to be considering it! But then went back to normal when she yet again turned him down. His pride actually took a bit of a hit when she stated that the other Marauders would keep him company anyway. As if he were asking her because he was lacking company!
Silly girl...
"Almost any girl?" oh he was quite aware of it, "Perhaps I don't want their attention. Perhaps your attention is the only one I seek." He tried to go back to his relaxed pose, having tensed up a little at her words. He'd taken them as a bit of an insult, and he wasn't quite sure why. Maybe he'd though that she'd implied that he lacked people to spend time with.
As if!
Potter was half tempted to leave and brood. But he would simply prod at her a little longer, then go off to find his friends. They'd likely be headed for the bedroom they shared, to check on him, soon anyhow.
"Besides, they've already been swept off their feet." A good cocky sentence like that put a nicely-sized band-aid on the wound in his pride.

Potter's accusations of never doing nothing actually made Lily think how nice it would be to go out and just lay by the lake before the last of the sun for the season vanished. It was just that other students always being around it was hard to find time to be alone. However sometimes that wasn't such a bad thing...even she enjoyed the company of others.
It seemed Potter was trying now to convince her that it was she he wanted the time with. "Potter, Potter, Potter..." She tsked slowly leaning back on her heels a bit as she shuffled her feet. Red hair spilled forwards a bit as she looked away. Though they were just words, having him very pointedly tell her that it was her he wanted made her cheek redden just a little. Never in all her life had she thought she'd have boys or girls saying these types of things to her, and though it was Potter it still made her feel a little giddy hearing it.
Still...it was Potter and the last time they'd interacted it had not been the best memory of her years here.
"Why on Earth would you want that?" She started, shaking her head, "You and I have nothing in common except the House we live in. You have no reason to want for attention, so I doubt I could give you anything that you can't already get." Lily sighed as she fiddled with the strap of her school bag before fingers went to smooth down the edges of her skirt.
"You have non-stop tormented my friend since first year, and have caused all around trouble for the House and Hogwarts . Not to mention you already have your fanclub who would probably go rabid at losing their Precious Potter. So why would you think it was worth your time to sweep me off my feet, that is to also ask if you even could." She bit her tongue rather fast, really when it came to Potter she'd always in the past just be quick comments before giving some form of the cold shoulder and wandering away. She was baffled as to why she was still standing her telling him her reasons, and for what purpose?
To change him? Hardly...maybe to finally scare him off? A boy like Potter didn't seem the type to reflect on his actions to make changes. He wasn't all that bad of a person, having seen his good side as well as his bad, but still she held some resentment for what she had seen. "As I see it I'm doing you a favor. You don't want me Potter. Save your last few years here maybe chasing after a witch who would do you some good, not just any witch because she's a challenge. Women are not a game or Quidditch Potter." With that she made for the door to the girl's dormitory.

James was expecting some smart and snappy comment from the girl, but instead found himself listening to a lecture. Was she lecturing him? It threw him off balance a little, it made him blink and tilted his head a little. Well damn, this wasn't fun when she sounded so serious! He resisted the urge the wrinkle his nose. How could people live like this? So serious all the time...was there any room for fun? Any at all?
The boy couldn't imagine living a bland life, a boring life. Damn logic and seriousness to hell. If he he had to sacrifice those things in order to live happily, so be it.
For years he'd been used to playing a kind of game with Lily. He would toss compliments and flirty comments her way, and she would snap back and either leave or give him the cold shoulder. This didn't fit the pattern, and while James wasn't usually one to follow the pattern, he wasn't quite sure what to do with this new Lily...
He wasn't going to make excuses for himself, or counter her accusations with allegations of his own. No, James would keep quiet. How much had it been his liking Lily or his simply wanting to conquer the challenge that was Lily? He didn't know anymore. What had it been about this girl that had drawn him to her? Her rejecting him? Was that...it?
'...Women are not a game or Quidditch Potter'
And with that she was up and headed for the girls' bedrooms, with James staring after her. He needed to brood over what she'd said...therefore he wouldn't go after her now. Damn it all...he hated brooding. With a sigh James got up from the couch and headed out of the common room, through the castle and out to the Quidditch pitch. If the pitch was empty, what better way to think about these annoying matters than while whizzing about on a brookstick?
