The day was finally over, and last he had left his friends, they were all in the Great Hall in a great fuss over dinner, and Sirius had decided to chat up a pretty Hufflepuff girl, James had Quidditch practice, and Peter may or may not have had a date. James and Sirius were making remarks about how he was probably making it up after he'd left the table, and Remus had heard enough of the speculation. He didn't idolize Peter, but he had enough decency to not taunt him about such a sensitive subject.
Remus had went upstairs to their shared dorm room in order to get his potions book. He hadn't had that class that particular day, but he had homework due, and he was intending to get it done before his friends returned and decided to start some marvelous adventure in the dead of night. Since when was getting anywhere near the forbidden forest a good idea?
Apparently all of the time in James and Sirius's books. It occurred to him on many occasions how much influence those two had over him- over the school. They were charming, popular, and good-looking- they had passion, drive, and talent. Really, they were everything that anyone could aspire to be. Everything that Remus aspired to be, and he would be lying if he said he wasn't jealous at how it all came so naturally to them, but he was happy for his friends- and so grateful to them that he would never do anything to betray their trust.
He sighed as he scribbled down some notes. He really should consider enchanting a quill to write our his thoughts. Remus was never one to do anything 'just to get by', his intelligence is where he felt he excelled, and he always went above and beyond. Unfortunately, it meant that he often felt worn out and exhausted by the time he physically wrote everything down by hand.
He was supposed to be smart, so why didn't he think of this sooner? So, he bookmarked his page in his potions book and took his charms book from his bag in order to research some spells. If he had no luck, perhaps he would try the library. He was so involved in his reading that he didn't notice one of his fellow marauder's entering the common room.

Sirius loved dinner. He loved food. All food. He didn't have any preference. He just wolfed down anything that was put in front of him. People sitting next to Sirius had to pay special attention not to let their plate in the radius of Sirius's vision. The only thing he usually sparred where the vegetables - broccoli and peas, but if you hid them into the mashed potatoes, and added some gravy to them, they would go down too for Sirius.
During dinner Peter said he had a date. When Peter left the table James and Sirius had a good laugh over that, Remus wouldn't laugh with them for some odd reason, but that was Rem for you. They speculated over Peter's date, and wondered what girl would want to date Peter, and snorted over desert when they tried to imagine up a physical description of her. Remus had already left when the other two were still pigging on any desert they could get their hands on - Sirius especially. Anyway, Sirius had plans with James after dinner. They had decided to pop out in the fringe of the forbidden forest, just to stalk Peter and see if he really was on a date, and what his date would look like. However, annoyingly enough out of thin air popped that Evans ruining all their plans. Sirius lost James to her. Like the desperate idiot he was James went running after her, even if he knew that he had zero chances with her. Anyway, alone and annoyed Sirius decided to let go off the idea of stalking Peter. He was quiet in a mood for getting ditched by James for a girl. He returned to the Gryffindor's Common Room, thinking he would get a shower, and find someone to bug, maybe see if Remus was around.
Sirius climbed up the seven flights that took him up to the Gryffindor's Common room, gave the correct password to the fat lady and got inside. His gray eyes scanned the common room and his eyes found Remus curled up in an armchair reading some books. Sirius grinned mischievously. Maybe he would change his plans - bug Remus now, shower later.
It wasn't the first time Sirius found Remus with his nose pressed into his books. Sirius could swear that Remus would get a permanent smudge of ink on his nose one day, and it won't ever wash off, not even when he'll grow up. And even as an older version of Remus, he'd still be the little bookworm, his nose marked from being permanently pressed into books.
Sirius didn't have the heart to interrupt Remus, he looked so absorbed in whatever he was doing - oh heck, who was he kidding? Sirius existed to interrupt Remus. His sole reason for being was to interrupt Remus. Interrupt Remus while speaking, interrupt Remus from doing homework, interrupt Remus from pressing his nose or any other part of his anatomy further into books, interrupt Remus from sleeping, interrupt Remus while he peed, and a whole list of other interruptions Sirius was born for.
He walked to his side, quietly, on the tiptoes, dainty as much was a ballerina could be wearing his chunky black boots. James had pointed out to Sirius that often those big boots had got them busted cause they weren't the ideal kind of footing for sneaking around, but Sirius insisted on them anyway. They where part of 'his look and look great with the hair'. Anyway, it didn't matter if Sirius was pirouetting in his socks, or hopping over on sticks, because Remus was so absorbed in his books that he was oblivious to him.
Sirius paused by his right side, crouched down to Remus's level, and was already getting ready to stick a finger in his mouth and make Remus suffer a wet-willy before snatching his book and running away with it - when he noticed something on Remus's face that made him stop. On his scarred cheek there was a big smudge of what looked like chicken sauce. Like any good friend, Sirius decided to take that off Remus's face. The only problem is, Sirius was curious. He wanted to know what it was. He wondered what it tasted like. Maybe it was his animagi side taking over. His canine mind was fogging over any human sense rattling in Sirius's skull. Sirius placed his arms on the sofa, pushed his face close to Remus's, stuck out his tongue, and licked the side of his friend's face. "Ah no, not chicken. Definitely steak and potatoes." he commented, grinning at Remus, licking his lips.

There were days when Remus questioned his life choices. Days like the time Remus pantsed a girl in the hallway. Days like the time his friends got stuck mid-animagi transformation. Days like the time they had started an uproar in the kitchen by teaming up with Peeves to create havoc for the poor house-elves. Days like the time he had accepted an invitation to eat lunch with his now best friends for the first time.
He never regretted them, but he did wonder how different his life would be without all of those instances. Boring, he expected. There was never a dull moment with friends like James, Sirius, and Peter. There would also be a lot less of trying to bail his friends out of detention. He was just waiting for it to happen this year. It was bound to, it always did.
So consumed in his own mind, he had no idea that a shaggy-haired boy was nearly nose-to-cheek with him until--
"MERLIN'S BEARD!!" Remus jumped in his seat, the book flying up, up, up... then falling down, down, down. It narrowly missed landing on his foot- the pages splayed onto the floor, the spine lopsided. "Bloody hell, padfoot. You nearly gave me a heart attack!" he sounded panicked if not slightly outraged. "And you-- you ruined my book!" magic could fix it, but it wasn't about to stop Remus from giving his friend a good lecture about why never to sneak up on him.
"I should hex you for that; I really should." But Sirius was his friend, and he wasn't going to. He knew it was all in good fun, and part of that fun for Sirius, Remus figured, was his reactions. His friend just seemed to like to get a rise out of other people, and he was no exemption.
Now that he was calming down, he ran a hand through his messy brown hair and pushed some of his bangs out of his eyes-- only to have them fall back in place. "One of these days, you're going to do something like that, and someone is going to punch you in the face- and I won't feel sorry for you," he seemed to still be a bit peeved, but he was considerably calmer than her had been all of two minutes before.

Remus jumped with a yelp, and Sirius laughed like a delighted kid of five. Remus was so amusing. He was so stiff and upright, that it made it even more enjoyable teasing him. Sirius laughed, he laughed so hard. Remus was screamed like a girl. He sat there, kneeling by Remus's side clutching hard the back of the sofa remus sat in, laughing his ass off and eyes watering.
Wiping the corner's of his eyes, still laughing, Sirius looked at the book Remus hurled what looked like fifty feet in the air. Sirius watched in fascination the book fly upwards. His mind was a place of many depths and wonders, and sometimes it played tricks on his eyes. He watched the book fly upwards in slow motion, its pages fluttering as though they where a flying bird's wings, when it reached a good height, almost touching the ceiling, the book fell back down. Sirius watched it in a trance fall down, gravity claiming it back, its pages fluttering the other way like broken feathers, until it caught momentum and reality sped in. It crashed to the floor. Sirius wasn't high or toxicated, really. Not unless James sneaked something into his pudding. It was just the odd way the workings of his mind processed his surroundings.
Sirius was still laughing, his face split in two with a grin. "Oh remus, you scream like a little girl" he rubbed the corner of his right eye, wiping away moisture from his eyes, still chuckling. " Pah, you won't die, don't worry." Sirius replied to his heart attack comment, waving him off. "Oh who cares about the book" scoffed Sirius, "There are thousands like that one in the library" he said, pointing with his thumb over his shoulder at the broken shape of the book on the floor.
"You don't have the heart to hex me, moony" Sirius said, still grinning ear to ear. "I know you well enough" and that he did. Sirius knew that Remus would never have the heart to hurt his friends in some way, or any other human being for that matter. Remus was a good friend, and too nice a person.
The next thing Remus said half-sobered Sirius from his merry mood. Even though he knew that his friend didn't actually mean what he said and had only said it because he was still angry at getting spooked, it still kind of hurt hearing those words from his lips. "You wouldn't?" asked Sirius, his voice a little low. He didn't believe Remus would, but than again he was uncertain if he had really meant that. His gray eyes lingered on Remus questioningly, appearing to take on an uncharacteristic round shape and look big and sad, turning from a pale silver to a slightly darker tone. He was giving Remus what the marauder's called 'Sirius's puppy look'. He usually played this card to get something he was denied but really wanted anyway, and won whatever he wanted with a blink of two big round eyes and a pouting lower lip. But this time Sirius's wasn't even aware that he was wearing this expression.

Now that he was considerably calmer, he was able to better assess the situation. Picking up his book, he found that no permanent damage had been done, and he was thankful at least for that.
Really, had he been actually infuriated rather than scared, he would have walled up and refused to speak to Sirius. The fact that he had yelled at him- scolded him- was really a normal part of their friendship. Sirius would pester, prod, and poke him to the point that he finally had enough. And then Remus would lose it and snap. This was often followed by Sirius laughing and then going quiet and moping after he had made his friend upset.
This time didn't seem to be any exception from the rule. Sirius looked hurt that Remus wouldn't feel sorry for him if he finally bothered the wrong person and ended up hit. Quite frankly, Remus wasn't sure that he wouldn't, but in some ways he wouldn't be able to blame the offended party, either. Sirius was a special type one had to get used to and warmed up to. Even he had been intimidated by his friend's fearless nature when they had first met.
If only he could tell his younger self that one day they'd be best friends. Well, the thought was almost laughable. For one, he wouldn't have believed it, and for two, he wouldn't have had nearly enough courage to stand up to Sirius even when he did do things he disagreed with. The werewolf took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, convincing himself to choose his words carefully.
"Oh, don't give me that look, Padfoot. I didn't kick you," he said with the classic Remus smile. There was nothing impish about his look- he didn't seem like the prankster type. His smile was sincere and gentle, and he looked at Sirius fondly. Nothing was ever going to change with him, Remus knew it. But that was one of the things he loved about his friend.
"If you keep doing that, your face is going to be stuck permanently." He added with a hint of amusement as he pulled a chocolate bar from his robe and began to nibble on it. Chocolate was one of the best medicines, Remus thought. He used it for practically everything. "I said I wouldn't feel sorry for you- not if you licked a girl's face and she hit you- but that doesn't mean I won't help mend the wound."

Sirius watched Remus wriggle out of his seat and go pick up the book. From the look of Remus's face, and the way he dusted the book and straightened its pages, not much damage was done to it (to Sirius contempt) He sighed. "They're indestructible" he muttered, and made a mental note so next time he attacked Remus, it would be with one of the dungeon's fire torches and set fire to whatever book he'd be holding. That would make the score of Sirius one and Books zero, and Sirius would gain a better chance of holding Remus nose out of his books for at least ten whole minutes.
"What look?" he asked, inclining his head to one side, and sounding genuinely innocent. However his expression changed quickly, and soon was grinning. Sirius grin was the contrary of Remus angellic smile, it was very toothy, diabolic and dripped mischief.
Black's knees where getting kinda numb kneeling there on the rug, he stood up from the floor, dusted the knees of his jeans, and fetched himself a nice comfy seat in front of Remus. He threw himself in the armchair, punching a cushion so it would stay proper, and leaned back into his seat with an "Ah"
"Hey, share some'' complained Sirius, putting his hand out, palm facing upwards. His stomach was fathomless, and it gave a growl. He still felt like dumping in some more food, and Remus's chocolate looked very inviting. Besides, Sirius demanded he always had some of whatever his friends were eating. He and James usually had a competition who gobbled up all the food first, so he usually turned to Remus and his plate who was a slower eater (he just ate at a normal decent rate, but to Sirius it was slow)
He made himself more comfortable in his armchair, crossed one ankle over his knee, and drummed his fingers absentmindedly on the arm rests, while he watched Rem, waiting for some chocolate. Sirius realized he saw some fresh scars on his friend's face, and the kid was also wearing a bandage around one wrist. This made him frown, and his heart give a pang as an invisible fist clenched tight inside his chest.
"Moony, I'm sorry about - about last time, that I couldn't make it. McGonagall wouldn't let me go. She kept me till three in the morning, polishing manually all the trophies in the trophy room with a toothbrush." he said, scowling at the memory. "i wanted to come, and was trying to make Peter come with me, but he wouldn't. All I remember is that I crashed out in an armchair after that" Sirius dropped his expectant hand, and looked down at his lap, upset. He hated abandoning his friends when they most needed his support, he got angry at himself for his human limitations. Catching sight of a hole in the arm chair's upholstery, where some stuffing was coming out of it, he said, "actually, i think this was the arm chair I slept in. I tore that, my chain got stuck in it" he fingered the torn patch, pulling out some of the stuffing. Sirius often liked to wear a small chain that hung from his belt, and went into his back pocket, attached to his wallet. Apparently on that night, his chain had got tangled with a thread from the armchair, and when he tugged on the chain, the material tore. The damaged hole was in the seat of the armchair, so it was kind of funny watching Sirius fiddle with the armchair's stuffing between his legs, pulling tufts of it out.

In an effort to show his friend that he truly held no real malice, Remus gave in to Sirius's bequest that he be given a piece of chocolate. He broke off the edge of the bar and extended it to his friend, keeping the full bar close to himself. If one thing could be said about Remus Lupin, it was how much he valued chocolate and its soothing, healing effect it had on him. He assumed it was that way for everyone; even the nurses in the Hospital Wing commended him on using it as a remedy when he was exhausted or otherwise upset.
The bandages and new scars weren't nearly as striking as the wound on his leg; but, it was covered by his pants, and he wouldn't have expected Sirius to notice it. It didn't hurt much anymore, but the scarring was terrible; it was something that Remus didn't care to dwell on. That night had been one of his worst; and, he'd spent three days in the Hospital Wing recovering from his injuries. It wasn't that it took the healers a long time to mend wounds, but he suffered from werewolf bites- and being a werewolf himself, he wasn't as easy to treat.
He wasn't going to say anything to guilt his friend, and he listened to his apology in complete and utter silence. "It's okay, Sirius. I know it wasn't your fault." He had been upset with the situation; and, truth be told, slightly with his friends. If Peter would just wash his hands... If Sirius would learn to avoid pranks during the week of the full moon... They would have been there for him. It hurt to think that such simple acts could lead to something like it had.
"Let's just drop it, all right?" he watched as Sirius picked at the chair's sofa cushion, and he raised a brow. Sirius really did seem sincere- and he didn't doubt for a moment that if it had been possible, his friend would have been there. He had let go of his anger and pain, however, and he didn't wish to keep reliving that night by talking about it. "The real question that should be asked is what the great Sirius Black is doing without his best mate?" he meant James, of course. "Don't tell me he is talking to Evans again." Remus admired his friend's resilience, but he doubted James's investment in the girl. To the werewolf, it seemed that James liked the chase, and he sincerely doubted that if she ever did give in that he would pursue it any further. He knew his friends well. He knew that Peter had long-lasting crushes on girls who were nice to him. He knew that James wasn't as into Lily as he thought. He knew that Sirius had a different girl on his arm each week. Remus didn't allow himself the luxury of crushing. He knew he'd end up with a shattered heart. And with his physical state already taking hard blows, he didn't want to risk it.

Remus's silence was more painful than if he had actually said something angry, or bad. Sirius looked up a little to his friend, and found that he couldn't bare to keep eye contact, so he looked back down to his seat and played some more with the stuffing. I'm really sorry, Rem. l'll make it up to you" he mumbled, poking his fingers through the whole in the upholstery, and looking up when his friend told him they should just drop the subject. "Okay.." said Sirius, uncertain if this was the real thing Remus wanted. At times Remus was a difficult person to understand, he confused Sirius. Remus had the weird capability to think like a girl, and you know how girls say no when they want to mean yes, and say yes when they wanted to mean no. There were times where Sirius thought that Remus did that girl thing to mess with his mind, and now was one of those times.
James?'' repeated Sirius, a little surprised at the change of subject. Sirius's brow furrowed a little, identifying the start of a scowl on the boy's handsome features, "Yes, what do you expect. He went running after Evans's skirt" Sirius said, sighing, "Love makes men silly, i hate love " Sirius sulked. Look how stupid love was, it was pushing his best friend away from him, all for some pretty petticoat. Sirius scowled to himself, still sulking. He'd never be in love, it made one lose their sanity.
He looked up at Remus, " Anyway, the great Sirius Black doesn't have only one best mate" Sirius said, waving the slab of chocolate Remus shared with him. Sirius realized he'd been holding that chocolate for a little too long and it had melted to the warmth of his fingertips. He shoved the chocolate in his mouth, and sucked on his fingers. "I have you too." said Sirius, sucking on his thumb and grinning up at Remus. "Anyway, what's up with you, old boy, sitting here with your nose pressed in those musty books?" Sirius asked pointing his finger at the book in Remus's lap, "Been here 'reading' to hide from you fangirls again?" Sirius teased him all in good humor.

Remus cracked a smile when Sirius told him that he would make it up to him. He had no doubt about that; although, it was Sirius Black, and that meant "making up" would be on his own terms and in his own way. If Sirius forgot about it, he wouldn't be surprised. His friends weren't known for their vast attention spans.
But he was happy when the subject moved onto James and his little obsession. Well, Remus had his own theories on the matter, but he knew that sharing them would end with his friends feigning sleep or rolling their eyes. No, he didn't think James legitimately liked Lily for anything more than the fact she was one of the only girls that would turn him down. Once he had obtained his prize, he would move on.
With Sirius, he never knew what to expect. The boy had his flings...
He laughed some when Sirius mentioned his books and fangirls. "I don't have any fangirls, what are you talking about?" While most of the attention of girls ended up focused on his two best friends, it wasn't as if he didn't get the occasional glance or crush on him. But he was normally too absorbed in his books or studying to pay them much mind, and even then, he didn't really want a serious relationship. They would find out about his secret, and he didn't need more people knowing- nor did he need the heartache relationships brought with them. He wasn't the type to date and dismiss.
"Any idea who you will be taking to the dance yet?" the question was on everyone's mind, he was sure, but even then, he wasn't sure who his friends were taking. He wasn't surprised that he wasn't on the list. The teacher seemed prejudiced against magical creatures, and his werewolf status did not earn him any favors. He wouldn't let the man keep him from loving Defense Against the Dark Arts, however. But he didn't mind not receiving the invitation- he didn't need to spend more time with his teacher than he could help.
