Best Subject: Care of Magical Creatures. Worst Subject: Charms. Quidditch: Yes, seeker. Patronus: In the process of obtaining one.
Hair: When Yuli's hair is straightened it almost reaches her waist-line; however, Yuli is usually seen wearing her hair naturally: from her father she inherited an unnatural body of waves and her red locks. She is not the type of person to bother with her hair, often leaving it down in a heaping display of red curls – if she is working in classes she will sometimes tie her hair back with a black ribbon, that way to avoid strands of hair from getting into her eyesight. Yuli cannot describe herself as a “red-head” since the red-head she has seen are mostly on an orange scale, thus she believes she is more of a red-auburn, the darkness a mirror image of her mother's brunette hair. Eyes: Her irises are beady, a gloss of black that is merely a film over a dark navy. Under heavy sun-light the blue within her irises are more apparent, but because Hogwarts is a naturally dark place within the corridors her eyes often come out black, often mistaken for a dark brown. Height: 5'7” Weight: 115 Lbs.
Some days Yuli finds herself having a short-temper, easily frustrated that she cannot perform spells as easily as other students. Because she is usually a step behind, all of her free-time goes to practicing and hard-work. She performs flawlessly on her written tests and assignments, or any research project for that matter, but when it comes to demonstration she usually falls a little short. However, when she does perfect a spell, it stays with her forever as though imprinted. Yuli is a person who finds pleasure in debates and philosophy, and although she was raised as a human she is very well aware of the Selkie mind-thought. Most of the time Yuli harbors resentment toward other wizards for their misunderstanding standing of “merpeople” since they cannot differentiate between the subcategories. Often times she does not go into a tantrum over the “merpeople” topic because it isn't brought up. She already had her fit in the Magical Creature and D.A.D.A section during her first-year.
Around strangers she tries her best to stay professional, friendly and accepting of everyone and everything. Yet she cannot help but feel annoyed or irritated at how the wizarding community works, for she is a very organized person – almost OCD, and often wishes she can use her father's people as an example of how the Wizard society should run. A lethal amount of anger is within Yuli, and she channels it through rough games such as quidditch and outdoor activities – anything to keep her mind busy and preoccupied. True to her Selkie-spirit, she is a singer, and has learned several instruments such as the harp and violin, and is now finishing off her piano 'lessons', although most everything music related comes naturally. Whenever she is at her peak, she wanders to a quiet area and sings.
Around her family she is care-free. Unlike most of the students she runs into, she finds that wizard families or even muggle families tend to have the most broken of the household. This makes Yuli sad because she thinks of her own family, although they are two different beings, they coexist and love each other and don't even need the title of "husband" and "wife" to ensure their relationship. Speaking of her family, she is the most proud, and if anyone was to upset her and cause her to get into a fight it would be insulting her father. She can deal with wizards ignorantly insulting merpeople, for she is aware that the other kinds are brutal and wished to be sought out as 'beastly'.
Being far from her home and family, she wishes to have friends but she finds it a little difficult to socialize. Some days she has a lot of confidence and can do just about anything, where other days she feels encased by a shell and doesn't want to leave it. Yuli is usually shy at first, and once engaging a reaction from another peer she can decide how to act, whether they are nice to her she will return the kindness -- if they are mean, then she will be just as snide. She runs on the belief of karma.
Yuli Uyyl Alvar is a special and almost rare case, as she was born from a Selkie Father and a Pureblood Mother. Her mother Ruby, was raised by the oceans as a child and within those salted-waters was a colony of merpeople. The merpeople always got along with the Alvar family, thus often Selkies shedding their seal-skins to play upon the beach with the Alvar children. Ruby as a child had gotten close to a male Selkie named Awlyn, and as she grew she began to develop a crush. Because of the wizarding world and the discrimination against the merpeople, the Alvar family were fearful that Ruby would disgrace their family.
Ruby's time with the Selkie male had gotten so bad that the Alvar family considered leaving their beach home for something in a wooded-area, thus joking that she'd probably fall in love with a centaur instead. But the move did not happen, for Ruby had been sent off to Hogwarts and they thought she would soon forget her merlove and find another wizard to betroth.
Hogwarts only fueled her admiration for Awlyn, Ruby was now exposed to the magical creatures and their history and knowledge. The more time she spent at Hogwarts, the more she longed to be home to see Awlyn. During her last summer before her graduation from Hogwarts, she had confessed her affection for the Selkie-male, who was most attractive within his human form. The two soon mated, but agreed never to marry for both wizarding and merworld had too different rules and laws.
After Ruby's graduation, she left her parent's home and took up a new one upon the shorelines of the same beach. A year later, Ruby bore a daughter and named her Yuliana. Ruby had disowned herself from her family, not wanting to be found and live her life in solitude with Awlyn. Yuli was born at first with webbed fingers and feet, but as she got older they slowly disappeared. Growing up, Yuli was very close with her mother for she was nurtured with love, but also educated with everything her mother loved best: creatures of the magical world. Ruby never bothered with magical lessons, believing that her daughter would not flourish in the magical community, she assumed since Awyln didn't know of magic neither would her daughter.
Yuli spent her free-time out with her father, feeling that she knew him but didn't know him at the same time. Awlyn was unnaturally beautiful with his red hair and dark eyes, and the only thing she found herself related to him was his appearance – until she would see him leave for the waters.
At times she would throw a fit to her mother because she had wanted to go with her father, but as she got older she would later find out that she had the pick between the human world and the mer-world. Like Awlyn she would be able to shapeshift between seal/merform, and human form but the merpeople did not welcome those who would 'come and go', thus Yuli would have to make a grave choice. That was going to be the hardest decision, until around the age of eight Yuli started to show magical abilities.
Both Ruby and Awlyn were surprised, and when Yuli became of age Ruby sent in a letter to Hogwarts asking for permission of her daughter's admission. Of course, they agreed, only one one condition – that they would allow a Magical Creature wizard to interview Awlyn and take research notes on Yuli. Awlyn agreed because he did not want to hinder his daughter's choices in life, now that she was able to have more than one; he wanted her to explore every option she had.
Although Yuli's mother was a wizard, she had been open to a new dimension of possibilities by being one herself. Although her wand was not of the strongest, she possessed the ability to catch onto things quickly. She was not ignorant or sheltered from the magical world, no, her mother taught her plenty – the only misfortune was that Yuli didn't really know how things worked behind the wand.
When she was sorted, houses were never an importance to her. Yet with all the knowledge she came with from another world, she was immediately sorted into the Ravenclaw house. During her first-year she was a laughing stock, unused to dealing with many people and not knowing how to behave around kids her age. Some of the way she did things were different, even the fact that she knew how to speak Mermish surprised many – not that she would do it above ground, of course, as it would only sound as screaming.
She had only demonstrated it once in class at her professor's request. Despite lagging in her spells, she could control flying exponentially, even at her first attempt on the broom she had 'went too fast' that even the instructor had a hard time retrieving Yuli and bringing her back to Hogwarts.
Because some of the wizards don't understand, she gets harassed and called 'fish', 'fish sauce' or maybe even sometimes 'tuna', although she calls her cat that to try and own the insult. From all of this harassment she has become a little closed off and even closed, but she is always searching to find new adventures and even friends.
