The best three words to describe Rae would be serious, neurotic and reserved. She is clearly serious about getting good scores and keeping them, but perhaps she is a little too serious. She's the first to admit she's a little neurotic, but she likes to think she's loosened up a bit. She's also not the most outgoing girl and can be quite shy. She's not interested in giggling madly or gossip and she's prone to hurt feelings. Maybe she's been a little too serious to stop and live life, but that doesn't mean she hasn't found a way to live life the way she knows how, even if that means long hours in the library. She struggles to be social and loosen up, but finds it difficult to relate to other students. She is slow to anger and doesn't like to judge, but that doesn't mean she won't.
Rae is close to her mother, if only because they are the only two in their family with magical talent and she can relate to her mother more than anyone. For that reason, she thinks her father is afraid of them and her relationship with him has suffered. She considered her mother her friend and loves her dearly. However, she's also afraid that her parents won't love her for the flawed human being she is. She's insecure in her social life and struggles in the classes her mother aced. Her attitude around them suggests she lived under a strict household that left little room for failure.
Her favorite classes are Astronomy and Arithmancy. What she lacks for in social skills, she makes up for with a sound judgment and her open-minded-ness when it comes to being able to see things. She appreciates the simple, natural beauty in things. She sketches to feed her muse and would stare at the stars all night if she could. She is by no means a seer or a fortune teller, but she quite likes learning about them.
Astraea was born to her parents, Ruth and Christopher Hollis, on June 1, 1960. Her father was a third year resident and her mother was a freshly-trained medi-witch. Try explaining that to a young baby that her entire life will be surrounded by brilliance and the same would be expected of her. She learned to read at a young age and her parents gave her the best that they could, wanting to see her be the perfect child of a perfect family. Those hopes lasted until she was six when she found her mother's wand and accidentally set the curtains on fire.
Being that her mother was a Muggle-born witch, Rae was the second person in the family to show any actual magical abilities. This thrilled her mother, who knew that her daughter would be set for a life of magical brilliance. Her father, on the other hand, didn't share that excitement. His dreams of a daughter somewhat winning a Nobel Prize for medical research were dashed and he began distancing himself, choosing long hours and difficult trials instead of spending time with his family. The perfect family image set in stone at Rae's birth were shattered.
Ruth didn't hold down with that nonsense and began sharing her wealth of knowledge with her young daughter. Rae longed for days of an easy childhood with scraped kneecaps and bug-bites evident of time jumping off the rock into a stream, but found herself confined inside, surrounded by books and a nagging mother. Despite all of this, she loved her mother dearly. With her daddy issues, how could she not? Not wanting to disappoint the one parent able to maintain eye contact with her, Rae began studying as young as six.
She received her Hogwarts letter at the age of eleven and was thrilled to take the chance to learn her magic the proper way. Her mother's stories and over-abundant enthusiasm just seemed to make her all the more excited. Her father even managed a show of support and bought her Hoot, her little owl, whom she loves dearly. She was sorted into Hufflepuff and found herself embracing life at Hogwarts, away from all the stress and high expectations.
Six years later, Rae has discovered she isn't the perfect person her parents were counting on. She is her own person, flaws and all, and she longs for them to accept her as she really is. Maybe she won't be a medi-witch or a doctor, but she'll find her passion in her own way. And maybe she'll also learn to accept herself for who she is.
