Regulus is kind of quiet. He doesn't like to voice his opinions or let people know what he'd really like until he knows them well. This leads to people thinking he's a lot more snobbish than he is. A snobbish reputation isn't something that bothers Regulus though, since he essentially belongs to Wizarding aristocracy. Regulus is quite eager to please his family and feels that he is bound by duty to be a perfect pure-blooded son, since Sirius skipped out on that role. The stress of trying to uphold the dignity of his family sometimes gets to Regulus; it's difficult to for him obtain good grades, play good Quidditch matches, and strategize social interactions with other Slytherins.
Despite the fact that he's probably his parents favourite son - what with him being sorted into Slytherin and all - Regulus still has something of an inferiority complex when it comes to his older brother Sirius. He's not as good looking as his brother, nor as witty or as large. Sometimes Regulus feels like he's a pale imitation of Sirius, but one whose mindset has remained true to his heritage. Regulus is something of a follower. He's never made a large number of friends, and, at the moment, he's quite susceptible to extreme ideologies. This is partly due to a need for acceptance, and partly because he is still trying to figure out who he really is.
Regulus was the second son born to Orion and Walburga Black. His birth was a premature one, which resulted in Regulus coming into this world as a small, fragile little thing. Unfortunately for Reg, his mother didn't have a maternal bone in her body. Having borne an heir and a spare to her husband, she'd fulfilled the role of a pureblooded wife; actually raising her children hands-on was beneath Walburga. Regulus was entrusted several House Elves who looked after him during the day. He became closest with Kreacher, a surly looking House Elf who doted on Regulus. Their bond remains strong - they are loyal to each other and Regulus views Kreacher as a parental figure. Kreacher is one of the few magical beings that Regulus feels he can trust and speak freely with.
Before coming to Hogwarts, Regulus alternated between spending his days bedridden, annoying Kreacher, and following his older brother around. Regulus' premature birth was almost a precurser for his wellbeing for the rest of his life. He was often ill, feverish and weak. At one stage, Orion and Walburga considered permanently employing a medi-witch from St Mungo's, since he seemed to need constant medical care. Kreacher looked after Regulus during his bouts of illness; the elf would sing him lullabies, make him chicken soup, and play wizard's chess with him. Whenever Regulus felt well enough, he would try to play with his effortlessly cool brother. Although their personalities were polar opposites, Regulus still believes that they were close before Sirius first went to Hogwarts. He blames James Potter and Gryffindor house for taking his brother away from him. Everything would have been so much better if Sirius had been a Slytherin.
In order to clear up his illness, the Blacks were advised to allow Regulus to exercise outdoors, and so Quidditch lessons were arranged for him. Being so slight and lean, Regulus quickly took to the Seeker's position. It was on the Quidditch pitch that Regulus honed his physical and mental abilities; he became quicker, more agile, and much more perceptive. Most importantly, however, his sicknesses became much less frequent. Being a decent Seeker is one of the things young Regulus was most proud of. For once he wasn't really in his brother's shadow, and he felt that his skills impressed his father. He started to attend professional Quidditch matches with his father, and became a rabid fan of the first team he ever saw win a game: the Tutshill Tornados.
Regulus was afraid to go to Hogwarts, since he'd heard rumours of the perils students had to go through in order to be sorted into their Houses. Till this day, he cannot remember whether it was Sirius or his cousin Bella who told him that he'd have to duel a professor, who would then decide upon your house depending on your fighting style. He'd studied for weeks for that duel, which, much to his relief, never eventuated. Instead, he simply had to put the Sorting Hat on his head, who, after deliberating between Hufflepuff and Slytherin, decided that Slytherin was a much better match for the quiet and cunning young Regulus. It was with a sense of elation that Regulus first sat down at the Slytherin table in the Great Hall. He was glad that his parents had at least one son in a respectable house. He'd hate to be the cause of heartache and anguish in his family.
The next few years passed by quickly. Regulus was fairly timid and tended to blend into the Slytherin common room. He had few friends and concentrated his efforts on his classes. He found that he was terribly bad at Herbology, however. The theory side of Herbology was fine; Regulus simply had trouble with remembering to keep his plants alive. Thankfully, because he was in Slytherin Regulus rarely had to interact with people of lesser blood. He was friendly with half-bloods (though he knew he could never be good friends with one), Regulus didn't know how to treat a Mudblood. While he felt that it was unbecoming of a gentleman to attack a Mudblood, he didn't want to be branded a sympathiser. For the most part, he treated all Muggle-borns at Hogwarts as though they were beneath his notice. The only time he ever had to interact with Muggle-borns was during Quidditch. Regulus made it onto the Slytherin team in his third year as a Chaser, and was promoted to Seeker in his fifth year. Regulus is beginning to enjoy competitive Quidditch. Nothing feels better than winning a match against Gryffindor, even if it's just to wipe that smirk off of his brother's face.
