RESOURCEFUL Isn’t this one of the main traits of a Slytherin? Cunning and resourceful? Well, then there is absolutely no doubt that Lucius was meant to be in his house at all. Lucius is determined to be the best, the best of the best, making it so no one can live up to his standards and he will always find a way to do this. It drives him through everything and gives him a need to find out how to do things, even if his tactics are rather unsavoury to other people. He doesn’t care, because if there is something that he wants, there he is as sure as hell going to get it no matter what it takes. Through his strive to get everything and be everything he refuses to believe that anything he does is simply wrong, no, of course it isn’t. It is merely one part in his plan that will help him reach the next step up. Pay attention, you’ll see that he gets it right. Bad grades? Never. Trouble with a professor? Unthinkable. Honestly.
CHARISMATIC How do you think the Malfoy family has got anywhere within politics without being charismatic? It is almost an unconscious flair that he possesses, accompanying his need to get everything that he wants. Attracting good possibilities along with people despite how he may treat others, because no matter how merciless he can seems he can be damn well charming. Maybe it is the honest smile he walks around with, or the helpful aura that he has most of the time. Why resort to bullying to get what he wants? It is a fine idea, but it doesn’t work all of the time. Do not question his honesty, he may lie but he has reasons to back up his lying and really, you might as well believe him from the first moment. Do you think this is a soft way to get power? Think of it from his point of view, draw them in with the smile, keep them there with the threats.
INTELLIGENT Oh, well really it is just something else to brag about. How could he even live with bad grades? Something that will harm his reputation? No, he gets good grades, but his intelligence isn’t focused all on that. He feels that he is more people-smart, he likes to observe people and see how they work, and then they become much easier to play. Some people call it manipulation, he just says he knows how to talk to people the right way, and then if that doesn’t work there are always other methods. He had taken to carefully evaluating situations, and all of this is much more fun that actual school work, you know. And if you are smart enough with people, why do you need the school work in the first place? It all fits together.
ARROGANT Lucius? Self centred? Never, how dare you say such things. He is just better than you thanks. Actually, he is better than anyone so why should he try and pretend otherwise? There is no doubt that Lucius is arrogant once you talk to him, or maybe you don’t reralise it? He is a rather good actor after all, but give him a chance and it really shines through. It can be just a hint in something he says, commenting about his talent in some subject or other, or maybe he just goes full out. The main thing is that he thinks that he is the most important figure in the universe and nothing you say can change that. If there is something he knows he will lose he just won’t try so he can’t fail, because his reputation is just something that he does not ever want to tarnish.
Seeing Lucius you would think he had been plagued by attention since birth, but no, this is not true. Since birth he has been passed off to others, his parents too busy to bother with a small child at even the best of times. With the people looking after him working for his parents, he learnt in time that it was not them that were in charge of him, it was him that was in charge of them. Why should he do what servants told him to? That made no sense, and wasn’t that how his father acted? He was always the one ordering people around and even from a young age Lucius wanted to be just like him, he wanted to be important! He wanted to be the person people had to listen to no matter what and they always got their way. There was nothing wrong with this in his eyes, and the people around him encouraged him. Would you have felt any different surrounded by people that told you that you could do anything? It was almost impossible not to think otherwise.
His father gave him private lessons when he reached the age of seven, he would have started them earlier if Lucius’ mother had not protested against the idea. The lessons were to teach him everything he needed to know about being a proper pureblood man. Small parts of magic, how to act, how to treat others. Lucius could never say that he enjoyed such things, but once he was older he realised how much they actually helped him. His childhood, not so much a childhood by other standards, was filled with these lessons, meetings parties and just observing other people. He could only learn by watching those who did right, and then those that did it wrong. He was taught about the pureblood families, and the mudblood families that did not even deserve his time. His father always told him to do whatever he could to be where he wanted, because if you didn’t try you were just as bad as the mudbloods that did not deserve anything at all in the magical world.
Lucius was not surprised by the Hogwarts letter that arrived by owl, why should he? He also knew what house he would be sorted in once he reached the school, Slytherin. Why should he settle for anything less than that house? It did not make sense, nothing else would be good enough for him. Honestly he could have done without being at that school, he was not pleased with being in a place where so many mudbloods lived alongside old pureblood families. Why not Durmstrang? That would make a lot more sense, but it had already been decided and he knew not to argue with his father. Not to annoy anyone with more power than himself, because that was surely stupid. He was right, of course, when he came to Hogwarts. Slytherin, like the rest of his family. He would have been ashamed if it was anything but that.
He followed his father’s teachings at school, they surely did him well. He had been taught how to get along with the teachers, make them like him to get far. His first year was not eventful, but by doing as he was told he was able to find teachers that would stand up for him, give him more power in the long run. He wanted to show other people that he was the best he would do well in his lessons. He wanted to be a prefect, and then head boy just to show others that he could. And it would be useful for the future. It was fun playing up to be the good boy, and that when many people did not know of the side of him that was willing to do whatever he could. The dark arts were a hobby, always a backup plan, though why should he get his own hands dirty? He much preferred to let others do it for him.
