as a toddler, narcissa was adventurous but sickly; she constantly would come down with a bout of the flu, and even contracted chicken pox at one point. she spent most of her free time alone, wandering around the black estate, catching butterflies and moths and putting them in jars. she continued to grow blonde locks, unlike her sisters, and was almost never seen with them down. she always held her hair back in a french braid, away from her face, which soon developed a pale spray of freckles. comically she was coined as the “white sheep” of the black family, exuding innocence and a carefree, liberated attitude. she never came across as angry or bitter, which would probably describe her mother or father best.
as she grew up she was coined as the black sheep of slytherin (again with the puns), mainly because she tried so hard to not be like a traditional snake in the first place. she constantly stayed in the library and sometimes even went there to cry because of the hat's poor decision. she now had to live with bellatrix and her wicked ways in hopes that maybe someday she'd be whisked away by some charming fellow who understood that even though she was a slytherin, there was hope that she had some good in her, which she really prayed that she did.
however, as she aged she fell into the mold that the black family was known for. she grew up to be quite the proper lady, although she did have a wild streak when left unattended.
one evening of romance between a renowned wizard and witch brought forth the conception of the third and last of the black family, a certain narcissa corliss. it had been unplanned and uncertain about whether or not the bundle of joy would actually make it into the world, though in the end it was the mother’s decision to bring forth her third child, a daughter. much to the father’s despair, he was unable to bring a son into his family, unfortunately only having three daughters. however, he was determined to make use with what cards he was dealt, and although his most recent creation, andromeda, seemed to be heading down the path of disappointment, he refused to have his final daughter be the same.
through a tumultuous nine months it was obvious that none of the members of the black family were thrilled to be blessed with a third child; especially with a third girl. everyone seemed to be anticipating a male heir to the black name, but it seemed that cygnus black was never going to receive what he always prayed for. orion made an attempt to comfort his brother, because he himself had always secretly wished for a daughter to accompany his two sons, but cygnus seemed inconsolable, and when asked about his soon-to-be daughter, he merely shrugged it off and left the talking to his wife.
january second, the beginning of a new year, also brought a tiny bundle of pink with it. the baby was born during an ungodly hour in the morning, kicking and screaming like a normal child would be anticipated to do. however, there was one thing that wasn’t expected—the child was born with a head pale hair. there had only been a handful of blondes in the entire black family, and the child was surprisingly one of those rare occurrences. with this, cygnus took the liberty to name his beautiful baby girl after the greek story of narcisse; the greek youth who was completely engrossed by his own reflection. in a strange way, it was cygnus’ first and last way to compliment his daughter. druella gave the newly-named narcissa her middle name, corliss; which meant cheerful. without realizing it they gave their daughter a name that meant a cheerful narcissist, something that the blacks were known for being. finally the last name black was written on her birth certificate, a name that was known in the wizarding world as being extremely influential and powerful. the blacks had been around for centuries, racking up galleons in their high-security vault at gringott’s bank, as well as becoming friends with some of the most powerful wizarding families in britain.
growing up she never really developed much of a bond with andromeda, who she constantly referred to as “drom.” however, her relationship with bellatrix developed, just not in a desirable way. the two were at each other’s throats, narcissa bothering bellatrix while she was in the middle of doing something, bellatrix taunting narcissa when she was playing in the yard. they never seemed to get along, and their love-hate relationship put a strain on the family name on a few occasions. it wasn’t uncommon to see a story in the daily prophet or in some sort of gossip column about how people had sighted narcissa and bellatrix in a screaming match in diagon alley, or a catfight that took place at a local party. however, as they both grew older they found a way to keep their secret competition under wraps, and seem to get along like close sisters would.
parties were always extremely prominent in the black family lifestyle; almost every week narcissa was dragged at an event with her parents, done up like a pageant queen with makeup, a gown, the whole nine yards. she would be forced to wake up extremely early just to go out and get ready for one of these affairs, curlers placed in her hair, heavy mascara and lipstick making her look like a tiny porcelain doll rather than an actual person. she would rehearse with her mother the ways to address those around her, the proper titles and manners and whatnot. there was a proper way to eat, to sit, to talk, and even to laugh in these situations. every one of her moves would be watched, so she had to be on her best behavior at all times.
once she hit age eleven she would wait every day for her hogwarts letter to arrive, and when it finally did she clutched it to her chest and heaved a sigh of relief. no more pretending, no more parties, no more being held up to impossible expectations. she danced around her room and felt like she was on cloud nine for days, and refused to open it until finally the high was over. she carried the letter around in her pocket until the day she got onto the hogwarts express, and even though she had to sit with bellatrix so she wouldn’t get lost or harassed by the older students, she smiled the whole way there, an adorable gap between her front two teeth.
she sat on the stool in front of professor mcgonagle, the old and worn sorting hat placed atop her pretty blonde head. her heart fluttered in her chest as the worn-out sorting hat was placed on her blonde head. she closed her eyes, wondering where the possibilities could take her. maybe she'd be a proud and courageous gryffindor, or maybe even a sweet and helpful hufflepuff. however, an intelligent, rational ravenclaw was what she aimed to be. she had even sat in her room, reading under her eyes ached in hopes the sorting hat would seat her down at the table of bronze and navy blue. however, to her complete displeasure she word slytherin rung out from the ancient mouth of the hat, and narcissa took her place beside bellatrix, who seemed to make a slight effort to introduce her into the house.
as she grew up she was coined as the black sheep of slytherin (again with the puns), mainly because she tried so hard to not be like a traditional snake in the first place. she constantly stayed in the library and sometimes even went there to cry because of the hat's poor decision. she now had to live with bellatrix and her wicked ways in hopes that maybe someday she'd be whisked away by some charming fellow who understood that even though she was a slytherin, there was hope that she had some good in her, which she really prayed that she did.
she surprisingly began to bond with her cousin, sirius, although the two did so in secret so they wouldn't upset the rivalry between the houses. sirius was already getting hell for being a gryffindor in a slytherin-based family, but narcissa prayed every night that the next morning she would wake up in sirius' shoes; anything but to be another clone of the black family. another disappointment in her life was when she tried to rekindle her relationship with bellatrix, therefore destroying her bond with sirius. this all occurred during her second year, so since then they have been regarded as enemies.
as her hogwarts graduation began approaching she was pushed by her mother to start looking for suitable courters in her own “class.” it was then she was introduced to a certain lucius malfoy, someone she did not only detest, but she was uninterested in courting anyone, let alone marrying anyone. she didn’t care if she ended up like andromeda, as long as she was happy and could have a large, happy family. she doubted if lucius could provide that for her, but because of the close bond between both families (and the fact that the courtship between bellatrix and lucius was declared a failure) she was pushed into his arms.
now she is left to try and sort out an unlikely, yet presumable marriage proposal, as well as trying to be supportive of the death eater cause, which she really could care less for in the first place. however, she fears damaging the reputation of her mother and father as well as her family’s name. she dares not betray them, and her worst fear as of late is disappointing her family.
