Although she is not without kindness, Ashta is not a warm person. She is frank and blunt and does not tolerate nonsense in her personal life or in her classroom.
She is not a woman that one would consider soft, although her actions are never backed by malicious intent. Ashta has very high standards and as a teacher she is rightly considered one of the toughest Hogwarts has.
Ashta can be perceived as cold and icy, especially to those who do not know her very well, but the truth is that she is very watchful and observational. Ashta keeps a hawk-like vigil over those she cares about and her students.
Magically she is not very gifted in the ways that most students would expect, but she is a very powerful seer. She often has visions and likes to keep to herself so that she may better control them.
She tends to give special attention to students she is fond of, those she sees that posses ability and talent in her subject.
India has produced a great many powerful seers and diviners, their magic is used and taught differently than in the western world. Divination is a central practice in Indian schools and considered of much more import.
Ashta was born to an ancient line of Indian clairvoyants, her childhood was very much centered around honing her abilities and her entire family was very pleased when she showed talent and a strong sight.
She grew up in a large, ancient estate, alongside her eight siblings and a slew of cousins. The estate was never lonely or quiet, not with her entire family living there.
She was privately tutored along with the rest of the children at the estate, but was pulled aside and sent to a very prominent school named Abhyankar, for the magical arts when she showed immense aptitude for divination.
She did not particularly enjoy being away from her home and did not make many friends at school, however she did very well and graduated with the highest of honors.
In India magical schooling began as a young child and Ashta was sixteen when she left Abhyankar as an adult. She traveled across Asia for several years, deeply entrenched in her own spiritual journey and made her way into Europe, where she met Albus Dumbledore.
He was impressed by her unorthodox methods and actual ability. It was a year or so later, after the old Divination teacher had sadly passed away that he contacted her and offered a position with his staff.
Against the wishes of her family, Ashta took the job returning to England once again.
