Despite having suffered a great deal of abuse (physical, sexual, and emotional) Elijah manages to be somewhat decent to others occasionally. He would help a first year in the hallway after threatening them not to tell anyone, but only if the first year was of his own house. He broods about the past a lot and suffers from teenage angst but other than that he could be a good person if he really put an effort in. He doesn’t trust anyone except for his one or two close friends. He has emotional issues and is mostly bitter towards others who talk about how horrible their parents are when it sounds like a dream to him. He notices that people haven't had it as bad as him and he wants to stay away from that because he ends up resenting them.

Elijah is extremely intelligent, he’s just lazy most of the time. He always gets his work done, though, and makes average grades. He doesn’t play quidditch, which lost him possibilities of some friends. He usually spends most of his time running, which drives other people away from him since he takes almost everything as a competition, so he would try to outrun them to show he was better. He wants to prove that he can’t be pushed around by anybody ever again.

Elijah also has a mean temper and frequently has the urge to hit something when he's angry. He makes rash judgements of other people based on what he sees one time or what his friends say to him about said people. Along with this he is also very greedy and selfish. He rarely does anything for others unless it benefits him in some way. Even if he were to help someone it would be for his own enjoyment. If he wanted something or thought he needed something he would go at almost any length just short of murder to get it. Not caring who he hurts or what rules he breaks he will find a way to make himself happy at the expense of other people. He likes to be the center of attention even though he doesn't know what to do when he as the spotlight on him. He can't stand the idea of bullying someone but he has no problem sitting back and watching his friends do things of that sort.

Thomas and Cynthia Barefield were horrible people. They met during school, as most couples did. Instantly were attracted to each other and eloped. They weren't in their right minds. Thrill seeking lead them to murder, steal, and lie their way to wherever they wanted to go. Along the way they had to hide once they found out that Cynthia was pregnant with a baby boy. When he was born they named him Daniel. Soon Thomas and Cynthia were caught forcing Daniel to go into the muggle foster system.

Daniel was moved from family to family. When he was five he was moved to another muggle family, the Taylors, where the father started drinking and hitting him repeatedly. The mother wasn’t any better. While the father was off to work (a job he soon got fired from) she forced him onto his bed and told him she was just making sure that he was ok. He came to hate her. As soon as the father lost his job the mother left, leaving Daniel (now John, but he came up with his own name, Elijah Anthony Carter) alone with his foster father. He was almost beat to death and had to be taken to the hospital for multiple broken bones. He was soon out of that house and moved onto the next one.

Fate didn’t spare Elijah a chance as every new family he went to was worse than the previous house. Soon he had been in the hospital multiple times until he was moved into the Ward home. The parents treated him well but he had such a bad attitude about parents that he ran away. He was almost out of the city when an owl approached him with a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

At first he thought it was a sham but then he remembered that sometimes unfortunate things happened to his foster father whenever Elijah was feeling angry or scared. He was bound and determined to find a way to London where he found another student who was going to be a first year. This child’s parents gladly bought all of his school supplies and he knew from then on that he and Antonin Dolohov would be friends for a long time.

Hogwarts was a dream all its own even though Elijah wouldn’t open up to anyone besides his one friend. He was so bitter that he couldn’t keep another friend besides Dolohov, and he decided that was all he needed. He didn’t need parents or authority. He soon went to work (He needed money), only focusing on his job, working out and getting strong so no one would ever want to hurt him again, and his school work. Every summer he dodged the foster parents he was assigned to and stayed at his only friend’s house,
