Professor Slughorn had taken an instant liking to him, which Erebus came to found out meant gaining special privileges. One of these privileges was visiting the potions classroom after classroom hours. It was an understatement to say that Erebus had trouble making friends. He wasn't always like other boys his own age, and even those older than him found him to be odd- he doubted the quidditch team much cared for him given that he was quite an adept seeker at such a young age.
What did age have to do with anything really? Who were they to judge him just because he didn't "act" his age. Sometimes he acted younger than thirteen and at other times much older. The way he clung to girls was juvenile- but the way he handled his magic showed he knew more beyond his years. So why? How? Where had he studied magic before now?
He had declined Slughorn's help in creating some felix felicis- "liquid luck", though he could sense his professor's reluctance to let him do so. With any luck, six months of hard laboring over this spare cauldron wouldn't be a complete waste of his time. And yet, somehow, this all felt so familiar to him. He added the ingredients that were needed for the potion in its beginning stage and channeled the magic through his veins as he stirred. He wasn't behaving by the book- in fact, he'd barely glanced at it. Everything seemed to be working from memory.
But, at the very least, if he succeeded, the professor would have someone else to brag about. He didn't mind letting the man take the credit for teaching him- after all, he was being generous enough to allow him to use his ingredients which were expensive in of itself, and Erebus didn't have any money. In fact, he didn't even have a home.

In the hours long after classes had ended Lily took the extra time she had between duties and dinner to wander down towards the dungeons, more specifically the potions room. It was a privilege being considered one of Slughorn's elite, it meant more hours to work during a time where reaching sixth year meant no more one hour quick brewed potions. So she was happy to have them to work and practice, keep her marks up high there, in case others such as Defense Against the Dark Arts proved more than frustrating later on If Lily wanted to do what she wanted in the future though....
It was no time to think of it as Lily hurried down the stairs into the dungeon looking around until she came to the room she knew so familiarly well as the classroom. She enjoyed it, the time alone, the extra materials, no one rushing her. In her arms along with her books was a rather large back of baked cookies she often had sent to her a nice treat for homework snacks, and also another little trick to having more time to herself instead of being interrupted by Slughorn if he was lingering. She loved the man, but Merlin's beard he talked more then he taught in the after hours when she wanted to work.
However it was not Slughorn or another professor in the room as she entered, but rather another student. Stopping for a moment she looked at him curiously. It was rare for her to run into another student unless he or she was another pet student from another year for the older professor. Most of the time they were about Lily's age, they knew their stuff....however he looked very different from the faces she was use to. He was young, very young really as she smiled from the doorway walking in a little further.
"Oh...I'm sorry..." She finally spoke up, letting the door close behind her, " I don't mean to disturb you, I wasn't expecting anyone else to be here working." Her shoes padded quietly along the stone floor as she got closer looking at the curious concoction and then at the boy.
"Are you making Felix Felicis by chance?" She asked, eyeing the vibrant colors as they mixed together. It was a surprise, she'd only seen a few people pull off such a lovely looking version as this, something she might risk drinking if she was correct about it.

He didn't bother to look and see who had came to join him in the room. If they wanted to speak to him, they would do so, but until then he wouldn't acknowledge them. He couldn't lose count of his stirs, even if he allowed himself to be distracted. He was almost at four hundred, the number he needed before he could rest until seven days.
She apologized but continued to speak which made him think she wasn't actually sorry. It was just some sort of polite gesture to claim that she was. It didn't bother him; he understood social customs. But, he was amused nonetheless. He didn't respond to her question until he was sure he had reached the correct number of stirs and withdrew the spoon from the cauldron, capping it with a top so that it could boil and simmer for the week.
"Felix Felicis, yes," he responded, a bit pleased she knew what it was just by looking at it. Of course he didn't know this girl. She was in another year than him, not to mention he had just arrived at the school from out of the forbidden forest. He didn't know many people save for two Slytherin girls and his teachers. Even then, the girls were older than him and not in his class.
He looked Lily over curiously, pursing his lips in a childish manner. "Who are you?" he narrowed his eyes suspiciously. He didn't know why it was in him to be so curious- if only he knew the truths to his questions he may not be so keen to ask them.

Lily did little to hide the impressed look in her eyes as she looked at the rather lovely golden color of the potion. She'd made it maybe once, and that had been with the help Snape who seemed to have the uncanny skill to make any potion to perfection. "Hmmm..." It seemed like now at the simmering stage all that was left to do was wait, no doubt this was one of Slughorn chosen students as well as she smiled at him across the now closed potion as he asked her name.
"Oh...I'm Lily. Lily Evans." Stretching out her hand she shook down the sleeve of her robe to keep it out of her way as she offered it to the other, "I'm in sixth year over with Gryffindor." She kept smiling, shifting the bag of cookies with her books as she moved to set them down now. She hadn't come in here to peek in on other student's projects, but rather just work on her own
"You don't see many of the student younger than fifth year trying out that potion, and even then...most don't get it right." She looked the younger boy over, studying him as she moved to her own spot as she buzzed around the room a little going to retrieve the concoction she'd been working on herself, let to cool now in a large corked vial as she set it down beside another cauldron. "That's actually brilliant if you ask me. No doubt Professor Slughorn recruited you to his little club." Setting the fire just right she poured the base she'd been working on, an extra project for herself really.
"If you don't mind me asking, why are you making that potion?" She asked as she began to go retrieve other pieces of ingredients she would need, rather pleased to have some company here.

He wondered why she was giving him information he didn't ask for, but he supposed she thought it was helpful. In truth, he did find it useful because now he wouldn't have to inquire about those things later. Since he had been given the facts, he supposed it was only fair to return them, "I'm Erebus Faust... third year Slytherin," he had been told to not disclose he was a new student- it wasn't that common even if it did happen. However, he didn't need the information circulating and gossip starting more than it would.
Erebus paused when she commented that most students were unable to make such a mixture, and he gave her a tiny smile. "I don't mind. Professor Slughorn has been very nice to me... He's a bit odd, though," even if he seemed to recall all of the information Professor Slughorn presented to the class sooner than the man finished his sentences, he enjoyed being able to make the potions, even the basic ones. And Professor Slughorn never seemed put off by the fact that he wanted to make the complex potions. In fact, he encouraged it.
He found this contrasted with other teachers who sometimes scolded him for jumping ahead in the books. He didn't know he was "jumping ahead", he just thought what he knew was common knowledge. He was thirteen years old, so why didn't older students know some of the arts that he did? It was a confusing matter, and it was leading him to believe that perhaps the familiarity he felt with Hogwarts wasn't real at all. Perhaps he had been home-taught. It was common in some countries... perhaps he wasn't even British.
"I honestly... don't know why I'm making it," he looked at the cauldron with a puzzled expression. "It seemed like a good idea at the time. I told the professor that if I was able to make it right, he could use it in his stores... I don't really need it for myself," he had no doubt Slughorn would insist that he keep at least one vial for his own use. But Erebus didn't know what that possibly could achieve. He didn't need it.

"Erebus?" She repeated the name, some of them not so easy on her tongue or mind to remember. Still she hated making a fool of herself in front of new people so she let herself repeat the name to make sure she had it as she studied his face and then smiled once more, "It's a pleasure to meet you Erebus, and I'm not just saying that, believe me." Really she was more than impressed by what she'd walked in one, "I don't get to meet a lot of the others in Slughorn's little club until there is a party or something. Really if he's impressed with you then it's a good reason for others to be."
She laughed as he called the Professor odd and she gave a small nod, a soft sigh following soon after, "Yes, yes...that is he...I guess. Really he seems more focused with me on what I am as opposed to what I can do. He gets like that, but he’s still one of the best potions teachers." It was true, as he often started off talking about her as, "As a muggle born..." as annoying as it was she let it go, no point in arguing about it as long as she could get the grades to back herself up. Besides, to be on Slughorn’s radar meant that doors could be opened for you and she was determined to make it into the Ministry. A position there meant no one looked at your blood anymore, they knew you earned it.
The things she’d put up with to make a better life. They all did it she suspected, even the young boy who now was telling her his reason, or rather lack thereof, for making the potion he was. “Hmmm...well that is curious, but if you can do it then why not make it? Could come in handy.” Cutting a few clippings of dragon’s talon she dumped it into the cauldron, watching it smoke a little as the dark violet liquid turn a little lighter. Was it suppose to do that? Giving a frustrated sigh she began to open one of her books and flip through it as her other hand sought out the bag of chocolate chip cookies her mother had sent. Biting into the sweet biscuit she looked up at Erebus before grabbing the bag and holding it out to him, swallowing her first bite, “Do you want one? My mum makes me too many, thinks they starve me here.” she laughed, brushing a few crumbs of the sugary sweet treat from her lips.
Going back to her own work she took to stirring the mix as it came to a boil and the lavender went to a sky blue. “So Erebus, where did you learn to make potions like that? Not a lot of sixth years even manage that. You kind of remind me of a boy in your house, a little older than you, good at potions as well. Do your parents make you do a lot of studying at home?”

She was trying to make her own potion, he noticed, and he could see that the result was not turning out well for her. It wasn't a potion he was familiar with, but judging from its color and odor, it currently wasn't meant for harm- though it was definitely not in a state for human consumption. He peered at it curiously before tearing his eyes away. "What are you trying to make? Something new?"
He could recall that once upon a time, he'd liked to experiment with potions as well. He'd enjoy seeing the different combinations and outcomes- little did he know that he was actually famous for it. No, all he knew what that at one time he had enjoyed it. But now... now he wasn't so sure he did. He felt familiar with the art, and it gave him in a sense of comfort now- it was the only thing that really did feel safe and familiar to him.
The prize of pastries won him over immediately. He was glad he wasn't stirring, for he nearly dropped his book- placing it hurriedly on the table so he could stand closer to her and get his treat. "R-really? You'd share with me...?" She'd just met him, and she was offering something to him. Sweets were his weakness. Though he may have had knowledge beyond his years, he was still childlike when it came to candy.
He was nibbling on his biscuit when she commented on his potion work. He hesitated. What was he supposed to tell her? "I can't remember... I was in a pretty bad accident and hit my head pretty hard. A lot of things are all jumbled..." he stared at the floor, suddenly realizing just how alone he truly was. "I don't have any parents..." he sighed. The conversation had taken a turn for the worse as far as he was concerned, and he only half-heartedly finished off his pastry, his appetite gone. "Are you in the Slug Club, too?"

Lily looked at the slowly swirling liquid in her cauldron and nodded her head, "It's new, that's for sure. I...well...I'm not sure quite how to describe it really as show maybe." Digging her in school bag she pulled out a circular glass bottle, the neck of it wrapped up tightly in a leather strap that let it spin as the light caught the flash of glass through the iron pattern set into it, "It's suppose to be part of a charm. Protection really. Sort of a double use charm, this half..." Holding up the bottle like it was to be worn around the neck, "Is to help with enhancing the protection talisman here, however if that fails then it's suppose double as a way to escape by using the potion...which is suppose to enhance speed for this one but..." Looking down she sighed.
"Mixing the two together, trying to make them cohesive and digestible without poisoning someone is a lot tougher than it looks." She looked up smiling a little sheepishly, "The professor for charms says it's nearly impossible to do. Charm a potion to work with it and then still be something separate. Might be just that..."
His excitement over the cookies made her smile as she watched him snatch one up, and he didnt' seem so serious then...more like a child his age should be. "My dad always says dessert should always be made in multiples in case of making new friends. Take as many as you want." It was almost sad as she spoke with him to watch the excitement slip away as he talked about his parents.
"Oh...oh I'm sorry Erebus." She murmured, a cold dread filling her at the thought of losing her own parents, how that must feel. Reaching out she let her fingers fall into the soft dark hair as she ruffled it gently, stroking it, trying in some way to offer comfort. He must be all alone then? The thought a terrible one to her. "It's okay, I didn't mean to upset you."
His next question she simple nodded, "Yes, I was asked to join last year actually. It's fun. What about you? Did Slughorn ask you as well? You would enjoy it."
