It had been a strange conversation at the very least. Remus had thought he had been prepared for all of Sirius Black's pranks and mischievous ideas, but he had been wrong. When his friend had hurriedly asked him to the dance, he had been too shocked and flustered to say anything, much less "yes." But Sirius had pressured him into making his decision, and he'd reluctantly said yes. He hadn't known what to think about it, truth be told, but in some light, he had been flattered.
Still, he refused to believe that this was a legitimate date. Sirius asking him could have been because he wanted both of his best mates around (he knew how Sirius felt about Peter), and maybe he had done it just so Remus could go. Whatever the reasons, Remus didn't know, and he didn't want to think about them. That was how he ended up at the snack table, drinking straight out of the flask he'd brought with him. It had been filled to the brim with vodka- his choice of liquor.
He wasn't sure whether or not he should be proud or sad over the fact that he no longer needed a chaser. He had when they had first arrived- he'd drank punch behind each swig, but now his mouth felt numb, and he could no longer feel the burning of the alcohol. Honestly, Remus had always been surprised with his own ability to hold his liquor. He could recall the first time Sirius and James had gotten him and Peter drunk. Peter had gotten sick in the bathroom, and Remus had passed out on the bed after a few more rounds- but Remus's stomach seemed to be cast of iron. He'd never gotten ill from drinking, and he wasn't going to start now.
He and Sirius had only just gotten there- and he still had half of his flask left. Since he was finally drunk but still able to function, he put it away and kept an eye out for his friend (who had left to find James- as their friend seemed to be procrastinating in his attendance.)
It was then he noticed he was being stared at, and why should he be? His dress robes were second hand and shabby, but it was all his parents could afford. He would be lying if he said he wasn't somewhat jealous of the others for having the money to spend on a luxury. He'd much rather have worn his school clothes- at least those were in good condition. But instead of returning their looks, he gave them a smile. Perhaps this was a mistake. He really didn't belong here.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Sirius had been scared and annoyed at the prospect of the dance. Scared you say, Sirius Black? No way! But unfortunately yes, Sirius had been dreading the approaching date of the dance.
He hadn't yet asked anyone to be his date to the dance, and he had left that to the very last minute. Of course he was harassed by one too many girls, half of whom he had no idea who they where, to take one of them as his date. Every time this happened, Sirius gave the girls a non-committing wink which made them melt at his feet, and he'd brush away without actually saying 'yes' or 'no' to any one.
Another preoccupation, currently occupying a large part of his mind, was Pandorah Koenig. He knew she would expect him to invite her to the dance, and if he didn't she would be very, very annoyed and call him names, which of we won't give any examples as they might be inappropriate. He also knew that they were still currently the talk of the whole school, and taking her to the dance as his date would confirm those rumors. Sirius wouldn't, couldn't admit himself to the rumors. He and Pandorah were not an item. Sirius couldn't be tied down, it went against every fiber of his very being.
He was actually thinking of inviting one of his mates to the dance. No pressure there, taking one of your mates. People wouldn't talk, right? But Sirius had one problem. His first natural option was James, but he couldn't invite James as he already had an invitation. Sirius was left with two options - Remus and Peter, and since he would rather die eaten alive by crocodiles before he invited Peter, it only left Remus. Moony would do great, he'd invite him.
But - something weird happened when he went to invite Remus. He found Pandorah there with him, talking to him. That was already weird enough to Sirius. Hot girl talking to Remus? The Hot girl he'd been lately associated with, and trying to avoid? It made Sirius scratch his head and watch in surprise next to James. When Sirius opened his mouth to talk to Remus, Pandorah out did him, and asked Remus first. That blank slapped Sirius. He stood there blinking at both of them, not believing his ears, and asking James if he was going insane already.
Remus was a dear little boy of course, quiet and shy, he gently refused Pandorah's invitation, he didn't want to go to the dance at all. That gave Sirius enough chance to jump up and invite Remus, and put enough pressure on him till he succumbed and said yes, even if he didn't want to go.
That was how tonight, Sirius found himself dressed all handsome in he finest robes, and tugging at the tight stiff collar.
Sirius couldn't find James anywhere. The little git wasn't there yet. Sirius turned around, and spotted Remus where he had left him, drinking from that flask of his. He frowned slightly. Sirius didn't mind that he paid for all the alcohol marauders consumed, hell he was rich and didn't know what to do with his money, so burning it on alcohol looked like a pretty good idea to Sirius. But he was now realizing that Remus was starting to love his drink a little too much, and trying to hide that from Sirius. But Sirius saw him none the less.
Sirius walked across the hall back to Remus, turning a few heads after his steady stride, elegant robes, and musky cologne.
"No sign of Prongs there, Moony. You saw him from here?" Sirius said, leaning against one of the tables set up rather fancy with frilly runners and hovering candles, they were on all sides of the hall these tables, the middle left clear for the dance floor.
"Not much people dancing yet, huh?"

James was no where to be seen, which was a strange facet in of itself. It was entirely possible that their friends was late to the dance or had decided not to show. He knew he had been surprised when James hadn't even mentioned to Lily about attending, and he hadn't brought up the idea of bringing a girl with him to them. Remus believed he may have had a surprise in store for them, knowing James, but he didn't want to jump to conclusions. Their friend, for all he knew, could be sneaking into the Slytherin Common Room to play a prank while their best were out and about at this gala.
And he should have been there, helping, not attending this dance where he didn't belong. He looked at Sirius with a dull expression that he was obviously trying to keep lifted in order to not make his friend feel so bad. No, he hadn't wanted to come, but Sirius had wanted him here for some reason, and he should at least try to have a good time. It was just one night out of his life, and it was not nearly as painful as the other nights he dreaded. He could stick out one evening at the dance for all his friends had done for him... the thought made him suddenly feel ashamed. What right had he to complain? They were there for him, and he should be there for them.
"Haven't seen him yet. Probably running late- you know Prongs." Remus said good naturedly, as the fact had dawned on him he owed his friends at least trying to have a good time in a place that was far out of his comfort zone. He caught a brief glance of a Slytherin making an entrance with a Hufflepuff boy- quite obviously pureblood and muggleborn-- wait, that was Rasmus Blackeberg, wasn't it? And the veela boy. Not only were they in the Marauders' years, but he knew all about the rivalry- given that Rasmus was the Hufflepuff Quidditch captain.
He tore his eyes away from the scene to focus more fully on Sirius. He hadn't seen any sign of Pandorah just yet. He hoped that the girl hadn't thought him rude to reject her. He had appreciated the gesture, but he hadn't wanted to use her- that, and he hadn't wanted to come in the first place. He wondered if Sirius would be looking for her- he'd never asked his friend about the rumors, but he suspected that he didn't really want to know. But he was that way when it came to all of them- if Remus could have had it his way, none of them would be getting involved in romance. He knew that James was destined to become a husband and father- Sirius, while he may never settle down, was destined to play the field until he met a girl as wild and crazy as he was. Even Peter would probably find some nice, quiet girl to be with...
His mind took him to the place of solitude and loneliness he'd been expecting all of his life. If the first full moon of the year had been any indication of how his life would turn out, then he really didn't want to dwell on it. He was destined to remain alone, and that was just his fate. He should have accepted it by now, but the promise of friendship had been too strong for even his intelligent mind. He knew he could put up walls as so many other students did ... but he had felt, for the first time in his life, the joy of being included in something, of having friends.
"Yeah, seems like it," he interrupted his own thoughts by focusing on the conversation at hand. "Why? D'you want to dance?" Remus asked him with a puzzled look.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Sirius pulled on the stiff white collar of his robes, He scowled a little at the stiffness of his clothes thinking how much he would prefer to be in one of his crumpled shirts with the sleeves rolled up at the elbows right now, rather than in the the fine expensive robes he had on tonight. The only comfortable thing he had on where his shoes. He looked down at his shoes, a more dignified version of his everyday big rough boots. These where less bulky, weren't caked with dirt at the soles and their leather was less creased and worn out. His lips twitched in a smile. The day had yet to come when Sirius black would be seen with a normal pair of shoes or sneakers on. Not even the dance could force him to forsake his style. His mother, his dear old mother who he loathed so much, would die out of a heart attack if she saw him in those fine tailored robes and his horrible boots as she would call them, but all Sirius would be able think of would be that he'd rather like it if she decided to die at the sight of his fashion twist, he'd bless her and tell her to fully rot in her purist misery and so much earned hell.
Suddenly Remuse spoke, and this brought Sirius out of his thoughts. He looked up at him, at first a little confused, than quickly realizing that Remus was talking about their other friend, James. " Yeah, he's always late, the little git" Sirius said in all his affection towards their other friend. I think I'll buy him a watch for next Christmas, he'd find good use for it." said Sirius, shaking his head a fraction, an amused smile tugging on his lips. Idiotic James, always leaving them to wait for him. Sirius had invited Remus on purpose so they could all be together, but Prongs wouldn't fetch his ass here yet. "I wonder who he's bringing to the dance?" he remarked, saying his thoughts aloud, as his eyes drifted away from Remus and they skimmed the hall for James yet again.
Instead of James, he spotted Pandorah Koening, that gorgeous curvy Ravenclaw he had lately been associated with rather a lot more than to his likings. Till that point, it was all fine. Sirius had on purposely avoided inviting her to the dance, he didn't want any further speculations about them that they where now an item. She was there. Not with him. All good. Sirius couldn't be an item with anyone. He was, Sirius Black, playboy of the school. Still, his eyebrows drew together in dislike as he saw who was by Pandorah's side. That rather nasty thing, because you couldn't call him a boy or girl, with big red horrible hair and a tendency to grope at anything that walked his way. Sirius had a strong disliking for that kid, he was a disgrace to their house. His strong dislike might also be because that guy had often starred too long at Sirius in a wrong way, his face made Sirius want to punch him, Sirius turned away, his knuckles burning him as he clenched and unclenched his right hand by his side.
Sirius turned away, he didn't want Pandorah to see him. Or did he? Yes. He wanted her to see him, how he was here at the dance, not with her. He made a rather 'look at me' gesture, tugging the lapels of his robes and turned away, facing Remus, fully knowing how much those robes made him look sharp, a palette of crisp white and a contrasting pitch black that made his silvery gray eyes stand out like two rough diamonds. His eyes were a darker shade than usual, almost a chrome color, warning everyone that looked into his face that Sirius was in a fast growing bad mood.
"Dance?" he repeated after Remus, like it was a curse word. "No, I'd rather have a strong drink" he said, scowling. "Come on, let's go get some" he said, in a rather dark tone that was an echo of Sirius character in his first years. He pulled on his collar again, gave half a nod to Remus in the direction of the table with the drinks and punch, and made his way to the the opposite way where Pandorah stood.

Remus shrugged when Sirius commented that he didn't know who James was bringing to the dance- well, he'd asked Remus about it thoughtfully but not as if he expected him to have the answer. Which he didn't, so it was a correct assumption. He hadn't talked to James about the dance. It wasn't like he was some fourth year girl gossiping with her best friends about who she was taking to the dance or what to wear. No, Remus Lupin was first and foremost and male, and secondly, he was a very responsible, quiet student who tended to keep out of others' private lives. He assumed that the more he knew, the more he'd wish he didn't know.
Of course, with Sirius, that was almost always the case. It wasn't as if he was blind to his friends' family problems, but he had no way to help them which only served to make him feel useless as a friend. At least, it seemed, James was able to help in some ways; but, then again, James was from a pureblood family, his parents spoiled him and gave into his every wish, and they had the financial stability to be able to do so. But Remus simply stood by, offering consolation but unable to offer anything further.
His mood for the night was quickly beginning to dip, and it did not improve when he saw James finally make his entrance with some girl from the Quidditch team. Perhaps it would have made some small difference if it was Lily, but there was the gnawing feeling in the pit of his stomach that James had chosen a girl over spending a night with his best mates. He wondered how Sirius would take it if and when he noticed. He caught his friend watching the Koenig girl, and once more he felt his stomach do a complete flip flop. He didn't quite know what was going on between them, but he had the feeling he really shouldn't have been the one Sirius brought to the dance. Perhaps he had misread his friend's invitation after all.
Remus was not accustomed to dealing with the formalities such as going to a dance and for good reason- such as this. He didn't quite understand the companionship invitations or the revenge plotting. He didn't play the mindgames, yet he knew that Sirius was an expert in them. It would have been impressive if it wasn't sometimes downright cruel. He laughed at his friend passing off the idea of dancing- he didn't really expect Sirius to dance. It just wasn't in his nature to follow any sort of social custom.
"Suit yourself then," he stumbled a little as they made their way to the opposite side of the room. He had already had quite a few strong drinks, and that had shown in the way he'd initially staggered. He shrugged it off with dignity, however, and proceeded to not let it faze him in the least. Tonight was going to have him on edge enough. "Maybe I should just head on back to the dorm. I don't think I'm in the position to be anyone's good company tonight." Although, this was said halfheartedly because he knew he would have to stay if Sirius started drinking heavily. He didn't quite trust his friend's judgement when he was under the influence of alcohol.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
When Remus mentioned he might be going back to their dormitory, Sirius grabbed him rather roughly by the arm, although he did try to pass it off as casually as possible. "What are you going on about, Moony. Your always good company." said Sirius, a half hearted laugh after his words. Truth was, Sirius didnt want to be left alone. Not tonight, not now, not after he saw Pandorah and he was sure she'd seen him. "You need some alcohol in your system, that's what you need, my friend Moony" said Sirius, and with just that, and a rather demanding and possessive hand clasped around Remus's upper arm, he pulled his friend in the direction of the drinking table.
Of course at the drinking table there was nothing stronger than butter-beer, but Sirius had taken good measures for such a thing. From inside his robes he pulled out a small black bottle and as he unscrewed the top of it, the smell of extreme alcohol, something that smelled of strong whiskey and a mixture of other spirits, hit the boys right in the face like a gush of bitter wind. Sirius smirked at the little black flask in his hands, satisfied with his choice. He pulled towards him two tall goblets of punch, poured in them a good part of the strong smelling flask. Thinking he had poured in enough of his special concoction in the goblets that it would set flame to their mouths, Sirius gave half a nod to himself and dropped in another good dollop of alcohol. He tossed the rest of it in the punch bowl, and neatly put away the small black flask in his robes again. Might as well get some kids drunk.
Sirius turned towards Remus, who already was not looking very steady on his own two feet. "Here, mate" said Sirius, slapping into Remus's hand the tall glass of the laced punch. Sirius clinked his own goblet against Remus's, and threw back a good sip of it. "Now that's what I call punch " grinned Sirius, one eye closed, shaking his head a little from the strong taste of alcohol that still burned his mouth and throat. "We can still have fun without Prongs, mm, yeah" said Sirius, licking the taste of alcohol off his lips.
Sirius brought his drink to his mouth again, downing a good deal of his drink in too little an amount of time. Just as he was looking at the rest of the hall over his drink, he caught sight of Snape in his dress robes. "Hnngggffffrrrr." snorted Sirius in his drink, alcohol spraying from his nose. He pulled down his goblet, wiping his face on the back of his hand, laughing in Snape's direction. Sirius slapped Remus strongly on his shoulder "Look who turned up tonight, Remus." said Sirius, nodding his head at the opposite direction they stood. "Snivvy came to the dance, you reckon he showered before?" he said, laughing, a little darkly, as he turned to chink his goblet once more with Remus's and throwing his head back to down the rest of it."At least now we know James won't be going with Lily ! " Sirius shrugged, saying it a little too loudly, showing the fast effect the drink was having on him, She brought slimy with her."said Sirius, his eyebrows meeting a little in the middle at his obvious distaste, " Man, she needs to stop doing that, he'll be the ruin of her, mmm, yeah? " said Sirius, turning to look towards Remus for his approval. Sirius was always doing that, turning to his friends to have them agree to whatever he said just for the sake of it.
