Emily hated people. People were stupid and they made her angry. A lot of things made Emily angry, but today was particularly horrible. First some idiot Gryffindor guy had brought a bottle of butter beer to History of Magic, despite the fact no food and drinks are allowed in class. Then, the fool was goofing around and knocked it all over her homework assignment she was supposed to turn in that day and all over her skirt. She had done a quick drying charm, and her homework, lucky for him, had been fine. She had dried her skirt too, but she still smelled like butter beer. Damn Gryffindor. After Emily had given him several go to hell looks when he tried to apologize, he had smarted up and moved to a different seat on the other side of the room.
Then, because apparently it was dump food and drinks on Emily day, she had gotten caught in the crossfires of an argument between a Ravenclaw and a different fool of a Gryffindor and ended up with a handful of spaghetti in her hair. After yelling at the two fourth years girls (apparently they were fighting over some stupid boy) for about five minutes she had gone to the bathroom to rinse the spaghetti out of her hair. There was no way she could get it all out with magic.
She rinsed her hair out in the sink and attempted to get all the noodles and spaghetti sauce out. She did the best she could and dried her hair most of the way with her wand, although it was still a little damp. She would have gone up to the Ravenclaw dorm to take a shower, but she had a Potions test in an hour and she really needed to go over her notes before the test. After two outbursts already that day, she really needed to calm down and focus.
She was walking down the hallway, still fuming, rather quickly as she wanted to make it to the library with enough time to study. She turned the corner very sharp going much too fast. She slammed into the person with full force. Being the smaller of the two, Emily was the one who fell backwards and landed on the ground. She reached back to use her arms to catch herself. As a result this sent all of the papers and textbooks she had been holding in her arms scattered over the ground. It also sent a sharp pain throughout her right arm when it caught most of the force from the fall. “Damn it,” she cursed under her breath. “This is not my freaking day, is it?” she muttered, talking to herself.
She quickly straightened her butter beer scented skirt to make sure she was improperly exposed. Damn school skirts. She hated them, almost as much as she hated stupid people. She started gathering her papers. After a moment of doing this she realized the person who had ran into her wasn’t helping her. Instead he was just standing over her. She knew he was a him because he had pants on rather than the ridiculous skirts the girls were forced to wear. Emily glared up at the boy. Slytherin, she noted based on the color of the tie, typical. “Well aren’t you going to help?” she snapped at him. “It’s the least you could do after plowing me over like that.” It made little to no difference to her that the crash was just as much, if not more so, her fault than it was his. It was not the day to be rational for her.

Elijah had decided that he liked people (On this particular day). Usually his days were boring and uneventful but this day had been different. To start it off some nimrod brought Butter Beer to his History of Magic class. The guy was messing around and spilled it on some Ravenclaw girl’s assignment and skirt. This scene was amusing to him. It got more entertaining as the guy tried again and again to apologize while the girl was giving him a look that could curdle milk. Eventually the guy got the hint and moved to a different chair. It was just something that made his day a little better. It even made him feel good that this girl looked like her day was already ruined. He never would have guessed that it would have gotten better.
After History of Magic Elijah made his way to the Great Hall for some lunch. He chose the spaghetti and looked up to see the girl that he had just laughed at in his last class. She was caught in between two girls who were having a fight. He shrugged it off, guessing that the thing that happened before wouldn’t grow into something else. As he slurped his spaghetti he looked up when the fight was getting pretty nasty and saw spaghetti hit the Ravenclaw’s head. He bursted out laughing, as did other in the room.
As this girl stormed out of the Great Hall Elijah got up to follow her. He had a feeling that this wouldn’t be the only other thing to happen to her. He saw that she started climbing the stairway and he followed. He knew what floor she was going to because he also had Potions with the Ravenclaws today. And the one thing a Ravenclaw will do before a big test is study. He lost her on the fourth floor but he knew she was there because he heard a faucet running in the girl’s lavatory. Just to be sure he checked the neighboring hallway to see if she had gone through there but she wasn’t in sight. He concluded that she had to be in the bathroom and he didn’t question what he was doing. If he had he would have thought he was insane.
Having given up going any further Elijah waited right around the corner she would have to take to get where she wanted to go. He leaned against the wall with his arms crossed and he looked smug. He then played the waiting game. He started out with just looking around himself at anything interesting. He focused on a painting or two before he started to hear footsteps. Suddenly, in a blur of blue, brown, and gray she turned the corner sharply. He only had a second to ready himself but he managed to take her weight with only taking a step back. She, on the other hand, fell backwards. A smirk crossed his face as her school things flew into the air only to drop back to the ground in a mess. He barely heard what she muttered but he managed to make a snarky remark. “I would say so, especially what’s been happening to you in class and the Great Hall. On the bright side you now smell like an average meal.”
He did laugh as she fixed her skirt. As if he would look. Sure, he thought about it but he didn’t want to make her that angry. He whistled “Horrible fall.” He stated stupidly. As she started grabbing her things he just put his hands in the pockets and went back to leaning against the wall. When she finally noticed that he wasn’t doing a damn thing she glared at him. “Ooh, not so nice.” He justified her trying to make him help but when she accused him of all the fault he suddenly didn’t want to play this game anymore. “Woah, woah, woah. Hold on there, toots.” He paused just to let the comment sink in. “I’m damn sure that you ran into me. I was just standing here, minding my own business. Then you come along and ruin my thoughts.” Knowing that she would blow up at this he made a big show of bending down, picking up a paper, and holding it out to her. Before she could even grab it he let it fall again. “Oops.”

Emily was not easily embarrassed, but the fact that this stupid boy had witnessed both of her incidents today horrified her a bit. She hoped there weren’t too many people who had witnessed both events and made the connection that it was the same person. She liked to remain low-key most of the time. She doubted anyone would know her at all if it weren’t for her temper. How dare he make jokes about and act so amused. It was almost enough to make her snap again. Emily looked up at him with narrowed eyes and glared. “I’m glad my misfortune amuses you. Perhaps someday soon you’ll return the favor,” she said her voice dripping with sarcasm.
She snorted and rolled her eyes. Horrible fall. What a stupid thing to say. Damn straight it was a horrible fall. It was a horrible fall to go with a horrible day. It was his fault too, but he just stood there smirking and being amused by her misfortune. What a jerk. Her temper flared again when he suggested it was her fault. In a more rational moment, she would probably have agreed. Today, however, she was not rational. She was having a horrible day and she felt perfectly justified in being irrational. “You were standing, in the hallway, where people are supposed to be walking. Not lounging about taking a lot of space and causing girls to fall down and lose all their notes.”
She rolled her eyes again. One sheet of paper. He probably thought he was hilarious. She leaned forward to snatch it out of his hand when he had the nerve to drop the sheet of paper and let it drift slowly to the ground. “You are such an ass,” she said almost shaking with anger. She leaned forward to grab the sheet of paper resting her weight on her right wrist. A sharp pain shot through her wrist and she let out an involuntary gasp. She quickly shifted her weight. As if today couldn’t possibly get any worse. She did not have time to go to the hospital wing. She was going to have to suffer through the pain until after her test.
She quickly gathered the rest of her papers and books, being careful to favor her bad wrist. She managed to gather everything and stand up with only a few winces. She glared at the Slytherin again. “Well I hope you are properly amused. It was such a treat meeting you. Hopefully our paths don’t cross again.”

Elijah couldn’t help but want to push more of this girl’s buttons when she fixed her ‘die now’ glare at him. At her comment he just shrugged as if she wasn’t that angry. “Ah, I don’t think that will happen. With you it’s all just too hilarious. I don’t think I could ever go through that much bad luck in one day. I think I’ve used just about all that bad luck I could get in my lifetime.” He almost winced at mentioning that but how was she to know what he meant. At the moment he realized that his sleeves were rolled up and he hid his right arm from her view. He doubted he would really talk to her after this but he just had to make sure that she didn’t see anything she wasn’t supposed to.
Elijah had enough nerve to actually let out a laugh when she tried to defend herself that it was actually his fault. He felt like he knew how to press her buttons already and it just seemed so fun to do. He had never had this much fun talking to someone…well, in a while. He probably never had this much fun talking to someone. Although talking and arguing could be taken as two different things. He then glared at her to cover up how amused he was. “I didn’t know that standing the hallway was a crime.” He started to argue but stopped. He took a breath. “You caught me. I admit it. I was standing in the hall to purposely make girls fall and drop all of their things. I’ve been doing it for years and you’re the one that finally caught me.” He paused, hoping she would feel a bit stupid. “Honestly. Get down from your little pedestal and join the rest of the mortals here on Earth.”
As he watched the paper fall to the ground Elijah noticed something. “Are you actually shaking with rage? I didn’t think anyone did that.” He mused. He started to laugh until he heard her gasp in pain. It was then that this didn’t seem funny to him anymore. She was hurt. Why should I care? He reasoned. But for some reason it was bugging him. The smirk was wiped off his face and he stepped forward and she got ready to walk away. “Wait a sec.” He said a little louder than he should have. He grabbed her right wrist gently to see if it was actually hurt. When he got his confirmation he moved his hand up to her elbow and started pulling her. “You’re not going anywhere.” He said as he started to walk, ready to drag her if necessary.

All the bad luck I could get in my lifetime. What the hell did that mean? It sounded like he was implying that plenty of bad things had happened to him in his life. Perhaps that was true. Perhaps he had a horrible childhood. That didn’t excuse his horrible behavior now. It didn’t give him the right to mock her misfortunes and make her horrible day even worse. There was no sense in kicking someone when they were already down. There is no horrible childhood bad enough to excuse it. He was probably being over dramatic anyways. He probably had just broken up with a girlfriend or something. Why did she even care? Damn her intuitive mind for catching such a casual, throw-away statement and her curiosity for hypothesizing what exactly it meant.
Damn him for catching how ridiculous her statement sounded. It sounded perfectly rational in her head before she said it. He was standing in the hallway where people were supposed to be walking. Was it really her fault that she hadn’t expected someone to be standing there? Yes, she supposed it was. That really wasn’t the point though. Emily Watkins did not admit defeat. “Standing in the middle of walkway is. You should be more careful where you stand instead of getting in everyone’s way.”
She gave him a nasty look and started to storm past him towards the library. Then he grabbed her right wrist and she couldn’t help but let out another loud gasp. He seemed to be checking to make sure she was hurt, because after she gasped he moved his hand to her elbow. She was furious. She was upset that someone had seen her in pain. She was upset that he had grabbed her arm. She was even more upset that he was ordering her around like he had some sort of authority over her. She didn’t need anyone to take care of her. He had no right to tell her what to do. “I will go wherever I damn well please, and you will not stop me. I am just fine, and even if I wasn’t, I don’t need someone to take care of me. I take care of myself. Now if you want to keep that arm I suggest you let go of me. Right. Now.” She wasn’t normally a particularly intimidating person, but she said it with enough venom in her voice that it honestly sounded like she meant it.

Elijah laughed again as she again tried to justify what she had originally said. She was a stubborn pain in his ass already but there was something weird about her that he had to figure out. It probably wasn’t complicated. She was annoying, bossy, and stubborn. She refused to believe anything besides what she originally thought about anything. It was kind of endearing in its own way but he let that go. “If you want to go into specifics I wasn’t standing in the middle of the walkway. I was leaning against the wall. And the only person’s way I seem to have gotten in was only yours. In fact, you actually got in my way so I think you should be apologizing right now.”
Elijah felt kind of bad when he grabbed her wrist, knowing it would cause pain. Wait. He felt bad? He shook that off immediately. When she snapped at him he made a point to roll his eyes just to annoy her even more. What a pain. Didn’t even want to heal her own wrist. What kind of person was she, anyway? He almost tuned her out but decided it was probably in his best interest to respect her wishes and all that bullshit. What a brat. He was just trying to help, which he didn’t do very often, and she just kept bitching. It was kind of sad now that he really thought about it.
Elijah caved in as he let out a groan. “You are such a pain in the ass. Fine!” At this he let her go and took a step closer to her. ‘But take this into account. No matter how independent you think you are you still have a potions test coming up. I’m going to make sure to sit next to you so I can personally see how hard it’s going to be on you and hear you whine and bitch about it. That way I can rub it in your snobbish face that I tried to help, which I don’t do very often or for any normal person.” He trailed off, hoping she wouldn’t get more out of that statement. He didn’t even know what he meant by the statement in the first place. “I will just laugh because you are too bossy and god damn stubborn that you refuse to get help for your stupid broken wrist!”

The more he laughed the angrier she became. When she got angry, which was not nearly as often as today was making it seem like, her stubborn gene kicked in. When her stubborn gene kicked in there was no way she would admit defeat, at least not until she calmed down, and that wasn’t likely to happen any time soon. She scoffed. “You think I should apologize? For what? Walking in the hallway? That’s what the hallway is for. Getting from point A to point B. Not a place for people to stand for no apparent reason and get in other people’s way. So I apologize. I’m sorry you are such a jerk.”
She was a pain in the ass? He had knocked her over (sort of), mocked her for getting food thrown at her and getting spilled all over by no fault of her own, and now he was ordering her around like some silly little girl who can’t think for herself. She really, really hated this guy. “Then why are you trying to help me when I clearly don’t want or need your help? It does not hurt that bad and even if it did, I’m perfectly capable of walking to the Hospital Wing. I didn’t sprain my ankle or get a concussion. I’m not going to walk on my hands to the Hospital Wing.”
Now she felt like she didn’t sound quite so irrational. Her reasoning actually made sense. There was no reason for him to escort her to the hospital wing, if she were going to the hospital wing, which she wasn’t going to do because she didn’t need to. “So you go right ahead and laugh, but I will take that test today and I will ace it. Then, if I feel like it, I will walk myself to the hospital wing, no assistance required from anybody, certainly not from an arrogant jerk like you.” Then she stepped off to the side so he was no longer in front of her and yet again, stormed off towards the library.

Elijah was starting to think that he should be tired of this but the more she fought the more he enjoyed himself. He could tell that neither of them would give up in this argument but he stood his ground as if he was going to come out the other side triumphant. As he heard her rebuttal he opened his mouth to talk but was cut off by each of her questions. “Well I was at point A and that was my point B. It isn’t my fault that my destination was in your way.” As she gave her ‘apology’ he couldn’t help but let his look become even more amused. “Thanks for the apology but I don’t think that was your fault. If it was you have a lot of explaining to do.”
Elijah was actually getting annoyed with… What was her name? He shook the thought off. This girl was a bigger pain than he had expected her to bed. What a joke. “If this is how you treat people who try to help you I wonder if you have any friends at all.” He was going to mention that she would have a hard time cutting ingredients and stirring her potion. He though Ravenclaws would want everything to be tip top shape for a test. “It doesn’t hurt that bad? When I touched it you practically yelped!”
“Never mind!” Elijah almost screamed, deciding that he was giving up only to be smug in his next class. She would be too stubborn to go and Potions would be hell for her. He would let her figure it out for herself. What an ungrateful pain in the ass. As she sidestepped him he gave her a wolf whistle just to annoy the hell out of her and then turned to make his way down the stairs. Once he took the first step he looked back towards her, not knowing that an actual smile was on his face. After a moment he shook his hand and descended the stairs towards the dungeons.
