Closing the book she had been reading, River lifted her blonde head and focused her eyes on the other girl in their shared room. They had been reading for the last couple of hours, and she felt it was enough for one evening, even if she hadn't finished the chapter. The book was filled with material that exceeded the expectations for a fifth-year student anyway, and River put a bookmark between the pages and sat up on her bed.
It was two weeks since the attack on Hogsmeade. The aftermath was pretty chaotic and tragic. Many of the students had been hurt during the battle, a couple of them even lost their lives, and there was a lot of things to take care of. The most important issue was the fact that this attack was a symbolic gesture of the dark forces stepping out in the open and declaring their malicious intentions. The war had begun.
The two Ravenclaw girls had been very lucky to get out of there alive and physically unharmed, especially considering their duelling skills. While Defence of the Dark Arts wasn't a class that Indica excelled in, River was just pain terrible at it. And unfortunately, her shortcomings didn't disappear once there was very real danger threatening her. She froze, and panicked, and couldn't do a damn thing but break down completely. If it wasn't for one Regulus Black, who knows what could have happened to her... Always a very analytical thinker, River didn't like to dwell on things that could have been. Suffice to say, she was thankful both she and her best friend were safe and sound. But, having been raised right, she did feel the obligation to show her gratefulness to her saviour. She had been thinking of different options of how to do it, exactly, but she had yet to find a perfect way to do it. Her father, with whom the girl had been corresponding frequently since the attack, suggested to bake something. But was that really the best option? This sounded like something she had to talk about thoroughly with her best friend.
”Indica,” her voice was soft and quiet when she called the other girl's name out, so she wouldn't have to respond if she was too into reading the book in front of her. Yet there was a hint of playfulness in her voice too, inviting the other to join her in a typically girlish activity.

Having been in no mood for a fictional story, or a biography about some famous witch or wizard, Indica had dug out her copy of One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi. The pages and cover were considerably worn, making her interest in Herbology quite evident. It was either that, or that she'd purchased it at a used book store. Though considering her familiar background, that was highly unlikely.
Indica hadn't dog-eared any of the pages, having too much of a respect for books to do so, but little bookmarks in a variety of colours stuck out from a number of places. With a happy glint in her grey eyes, she flipped the book open to the index. A delicate finger then ran along the varying titles of herbs and other plants, searching for one that would catch her interest.
Luckily she didn't even have to leave the list of A's, a smile spreading over her lips as she stopped on Aconite. She'd always found the plant to be notable, and the fact that it was much rarer now than it had been in the past, piqued her interest further.
And so she was lost in the pages of her book for a few hours, eyes intent on the pages and nothing else within that time range. Not that her best friend River had made any sound to distract her. And when she did, Indica had found herself wanting to find another book to hold her attention. She blinked a few times as she tore her gaze from the paragraph she'd been reading, and looked up at River,
"Hmmm?"
She noted the tone in the other's voice a few moments after answering her, having still been with her mind partially engrossed in the book resting on her lap. Indica smiled in response to River's playful tone, placing one of the coloured bookmarks where she'd left off, and shutting the cover of the book. Indica was curious to hear what the other girl had to say.

Shifting her weight towards the edge of her bed, River let her feet touch the ground. “Um...” the girl averted her eyes to the ground and took a deep breath of air. Where to begin? She had so many things going through her head lately, so many new and curious feelings to wrap her mind around. The issue with getting the perfect present to express her gratefulness to Regulus was just the tip of the iceberg, really.
River was a quintessential late-bloomer. She started walking rather late, and didn't utter her first words so long that it really got her parents worried. When she finally did, she spoke in whole sentences. And it was the same with romance. While most of the students had their first girlfriends or boyfrieds – if you can call someone you hold hands with in the school halls that – during their first years at Hogwarts, it wasn't until recently that River, too, became curious about romance. Up until about a month ago, the Ravenclaw didn't really care for any of it. It wasn't as if she loathed the couples she saw around her, but she really didn't care for it herself. If anything, she thought the people engaging in public displays of affection looked kind of silly. Seriously, what was up with not being able to keep your hands to yourself? Or even worse, the baby-talk? Ridiculous. River just couldn't picture herself engaging in any of those activities. And yet... she was getting curious about what there was to it.
After brushing a blonde streak of hair behind her ear, the half-blood witch smiled at her friend. “Do you think Alastair is handsome?” a playful, girlish smile lingered upon River's lips. This was an appropriate way to start the conversation she wanted to have, the Arithmancer thought. After all, asking about others first was only polite, her father had told her, and after that, she could tell her friend about her own worries. Indica had told her about meeting the Slytherin and him helping her back to the castle along with his brother, and since her friend hadn't talked about boys in the past much (except when they made fun of their lack of abilities in class), which had to mean something. And River was curious to find out what it was.
Even though the best friends hadn't talked about any love interests in the past, since Indica, too, seemed to lack real interest in romantic relationships until now, River hoped they could start talking about these things without much awkwardness, much like they shared everything else, and preferably do it on a light note. After all, those topics were gaining significance in River's mind, and not being able to share it with her best friend would have killed her.

The girl sad perched on her bed, turned to faced River with her legs crossed. Her expression was open, brows slightly raised, as she waited to hear what the other girl had to say. She wasn't accustomed to talking with River about boys or even love in general, therefore the words uttered by her best friend had not been expected. Indica's eyes went wide and she felt her cheeks go warm as they flushed. D-did she think Alastair was handsome?!
Luckily no one else was around to overhear them, or Indica would have much liked to hide under her bed and never come out. What was the matter with her?
Indica was no innocent when it came to information about women and men, and even men and men and women and women, but she had no direct experience in any of it herself. She'd never even held hands with anyone...unless Alastair taking her hand when he ran with her through Hogsmeade counted. No no no...that didn't count, couldn't count. It'd been a very dangerous situation, it had not counted as normal at all.
She brought her mind back to what River had asked, and even cleared her throat a little. The girl then parted rosy lips and answered truthfully, "Yes I do..." her cheeks reddened just a little more when she admitted this, and Indica shifted her body a little, trying to get more comfortable. A delicate finger ran along the design on her blanket as she spoke again, "That and...he's an amazing wizard..." her eyes slipped up to lock on her friend once more, "He's so quick with his spells...and powerful. Such a good dueler..." the girl then realized she'd rambled a little, and quickly turned the tables,
"Do you find Regulus handsome?"
Her tone was free of prejudice or judgement. It didn't matter to her that Regulus was a Slytherin, something that was always used for judgment for most students in the other three houses. After all, her beloved cousins Chord and Anastasiya were both Slytherin, and so was Alastair! If anything, she was really more concerned by the opinion that she should have been sorted into Slytherin "as was the way of things" rather than into Ravenclaw.

The subtle changes in Indica's behaviour didn't go unnoticed by the attentive Ravenclaw. Ever since the two girls had met on their first day at Hogwarts as inexperienced, little first-year students, they spent most of their time together here in school. They shared a room, went to most of their classes together, ate together... If that kind of closeness didn't teach one a lot about the other person, River couldn't imagine what would.
Her blue-grey eyes resting softly upon the other girl's facial features, the Arithmancer smiled gently as Indica spoke. All the signs were there – the blush, the stumbling for words when trying to describe the Redwood boy... In one swinging motion, River got up from her bed and let herself fall onto her friend's bed, so that she sat right next to the girl. Her long blonde strands fell in front of her like a curtain as she cocked her head to the side to face Indica. “You like him, don't you..?” she spoke with a small but kind smile upon her lips, the voice void of any traces of ill-meaning, and put her hand atop of the other girl's as a reassuring gesture. River was loyal to her very core, and not one thought of using that sort of personal information she was asking for of her friend to harm her would have ever crossed the girl's mind.
As bold as River was with her questions, she was much more careful with her answers. Her demeanor shifted visibly when she as asked the same question about her Slytherin boy (it wasn't as if River had any kind of possessive thoughts when it came to Regulus Black, but it was a curious coincidence both friends got help from boys of that House). The playful smile was replaced with a serious frown, her muscles tensed around her shoulders and neck, and she averted her gaze to the ground.
“Well...” her voice traced off for a moment and she held her breath. “I do think he is handsome, objectively speaking.” Regulus was quite tall, had a good figure, and his movements didn't lack grace. The combination of the dark hair and light-coloured eyes was quite eye-catching, and he had a handsome face. Besides, River had heard some girls swooning over him more than once. Even if the tight-lipped Ravenclaw didn't specify all these things, she trusted her friend to know her enough to know what to expect when she used the word “objectively” when describing the boy's level of attractiveness.
But then again, River knew very well that a report on Regulus' “objective level of attractiveness” wasn't what Indica had wanted to hear. Her friend had been very open and personal with her, and she wanted to do the same. A sigh escaped her lips before she turned her head and faced the other blonde girl once more. “As for me... I'm not quite sure yet. I have thought about it...” Once again, her voice trailed off a little as she got tangled up in her thoughts. “Ever since that horrible day when Hogsmeade was attacked, I'm a bit confused about him.” River had told Indica all about what happened that night, how Regulus had guided her back to the castle safely as he had found her sitting in a dark alley and unable to move a single inch. “Up until that day, I thought he was just another arrogant Slytherin-prick, but if he was just that, he would have left me there, wouldn't he?” There was a flame behind those blue-grey eyes, burning in need for answers to her questions.
