It was dusk- the bright red and orange colors of the sky faded to give way to the deep black and purple. Salem was wandering the grounds now that she was fully recovered from her previous stint in the hospital wing. She never learned, no matter how close to death she came. The same artifact that had cursed her, she was still determined to unlock and discover its secrets, but in order to do so, she needed an acromantula web in order to do so.
Granted, she should have probably tried to raid the potions cabinet, but she'd much rather gather it on her own- fresh and from the source. That, and she thought that she stood a better chance against giant spider than she did against an angry potions professor. She dusted off her Ravenclaw robes and looked around with her unseeing eyes.
Lately, she had been able to make out faint, shadow-y shapes. It had started when she had been on the receiving end of the curse. Though, it hadn't progressed beyond that, and she didn't expect it to. In fact, she thought she preferred not being able to see anything than she did to seeings indistinguishable shadows that blended and blurred together. They weren't even in color, and it was so dark, she wasn't sure she was always seeing something that was there or if it was a trick of her mind.
She listened closely, but she didn't hear anyone nearby, so she slipped in between the trees. Her vision went completely black, then, and she relaxed some. Now she could rely on her other senses- the ones she had learned to trust and perfect. She tread lightly in order not to frighten any of the more timid forest creatures. Briefly, she wondered if she might run across a unicorn or centaur- they were known for dwelling towards the start of the forest, but she was going to have to go in much deeper if she wished to cross one of the acromantula webs. She didn't need the spider- just the web...
Perhaps she should have brought someone who could see with her, but the only person she could think of was her brother, and she knew Kyran would pick her up and force her to go back to the castle. No, she would do this alone... or so she thought.

sometimes i scrape and sink so low i'm shocked at what you're capable of
The school year had only just started, and already, Jeremy had received a scornful letter from his father. He knew, honestly, that this would be the best of them, because he had nothing to complain about - not yet, anyway. The first letters were precautionary. The familiar, "Don't screw around in school this year, Jeremy," pained him to see, honestly, but it was nothing that would compare to the eventual letters he'd get. Those would detail his eventually awful grades, tell him how very ashamed they were, and how he'd get a good lecture when he got home. These were always accompanied with a tin full of cookies from his mother, though, so, really, he couldn't complain.
Still - he wasn't pleased to have received the first letter so soon. He thought he'd be able to buy a few weeks at the least. No, instead, the letter had been dropped unceremoniously into his lap that morning at breakfast, and detailed their expectations of him. They wanted to hear from professors that he was getting at least E's... but the last time he'd got a grade that high, he'd been in third year, and he'd cheated.
Jeremy was far from stupid - he wasn't bright by normal standards - which was why he felt he'd been sorted into Gryffindor - but he was not unintelligent. Not completely, anyway. He'd spent his day in Gryffindor tower, first attempting an essay, and then, when that effort failed, trying to write a reply to his parents that wouldn't come off as childish and strange, though all he was coming out with was disjointed drivel, and that was something even he knew.
He was now wandering the edge of the forest, trying to clear his mind and put together a coherent response for them. The right words were easy to find in his mind, and that was how it always seemed to work. Everything sounded perfect and eloquent and humble in his mind, like things some wise old man would say, but then he'd say them, or get them down on paper, and it would come out wrong. He wasn't positive what it was, but he was fairly sure things just sounded better before you came out with them, and before you got a T on an essay, and before you ended up offending someone horribly when you hadn't meant to. Quietly, he leaned against one of the forest's outermost trees, and lit up a cigarette from the packet he'd stolen from one of his dorm mates. He took a few slow drags, still trying to clear his mind.
If he hadn't looked up at precisely the right time, he wouldn't have seen her. He watched with raised eyebrows as Salem Sinclair flitted into the forest, and wondered what the hell she was thinking. As far as he knew, she was still blind as a bat, and... well, quite honestly, he wasn't sure if anyone, let alone Salem, should be wandering about in the forbidden forest alone. He weighed the pros and cons of his options for a moment, and then stubbed out his cigarette on the tree behind him, and followed her in. He'd become somewhat civil with the girl, anyway, since he'd 'rescued' her, and he figured he needed to follow her in, either way. When he crossed the first few feet, the shadowy dusk turned into near darkness, with patches of light cast onto the forest floor by sunlight filtering through the branches above. He'd never much cared for the forest - he wasn't stupid enough to explore it alone, anyway, but something about it was vaguely comforting. The crunch of dirt and leaves under his feet as he approached Salem, or the birds and squirrels rustling around in the branches above, perhaps.
"Oh, Sinclair," He said in a sing-song voice as he neared her, wearing that slightly lopsided, goofy grin. "Naughty, coming into the forest, and when it's getting dark, too... I thought Ravenclaws were smarter." He finished in a teasing, matter of fact voice, stopping a few feet from her. He pushed a hand into his pocket and ran a finger along the base of his wand, prepared, just in case she felt the need to pull her wand on him. One could never be too careful. "What're you doing out here?" He asked, after a moment, cocking his head at her. tag; Salem/Chii words; 757 muse; Be Calm - fun. lyrics; Famous Last Words - MCR notes; Woo post! It was the crunching of leaves that drew the girl out of her thoughts. She wasn't alone, but she didn't know who was there. The footsteps were human- so that was a good sign considering the fact that she doubted the most danger she would face out here would be from a centaur or acromantula. Still, it wasn't wise to keep walking deeper into the forest until she knew who was there. Unseeing eyes turned to look at the source of the noise. Even after being blind for five years, she hadn't grown accustomed to the reflex of looking. It was as if she always expected to see something.
And she could see nothing.
But she could hear. A familiar voice made her raise an eyebrow. Jeremy Cadwallader? Really? Why had he followed her out here? Yes, she had to give him credit for saving her life, but that didn't mean that he had to do it each time she put herself in danger. She smirked a little at his comment about Ravenclaws being smarter than to wander into the forest alone. She could argue that no one was wise if they didn't explore, but she wouldn't. She didn't feel like arguing today.
"You were the one who chose to run in here after me. Is travelling in pairs really safer than travelling alone?" She doubted it. If a group of monsters attacked them, it wouldn't matter. They would be outnumbered regardless, and then there would be two less students at the school. However, if he hadn't decided to follow her in, then she would be its only loss. She supposed it was the Gryffindor in him. Headstrong and acting without thinking of the consequences.
While she couldn't see his smirk, she could hear it in his tone. "Still a nosy git, I see." She raised her chin a little and inclined her head slightly towards the left. She was teasing him, and it was an odd sight to see. Salem Sinclair was a quiet girl who often ignored the world. She was even cold towards her brother, though she had to admit that he knew more about her than she was comfortable with. She preferred to keep everyone at arm's length.
"Very well, why don't you follow me and find out?" It would have been easier to tell him what she was looking for, and she would, but only if he decided to accompany her. She wasn't going to reveal anything about herself, including something as simple as "why" she had chosen her course of actions. If he truly wanted to know, he was going to have to earn that privilege in her eyes. Walking away now would earn him a cold shoulder and no further interaction with her. She was stoic by nature, and she wouldn't waste her time with idiots.
What she saw in Jeremy, based on her high standards, was anyone's guess. It's not as if she could see the guy, so liking him for his looks was completely out of the question. No, she was interacting with him because he was different than most people who approached her. Though, unbeknownst to her, that could have been her brother's doing. He seemed to monitor who she spent her time with such as his interruptions in the great hall. It amused her to think of his reaction if she was seen sitting at a table with a Gryffindor and a boy no less.
Her amusement was easy to read on her face- as her lips curved upwards into a soft smirk.

Salem posed a good question. He didn’t really know how to answer it, in all honesty. His mother had never sent any of her children out alone. Traveling in pairs was just the safest way, or so she’d always told them. It was true, though, what Salem had said. The only thing he could think of was the fact that if one of them did end up hurt, the other could go back for help, at least. Still, there was comfort in numbers. For whatever reason, he knew he felt safer when there was someone with him, but again, that was very likely to be in his upbringing.
“Haven’t you ever heard of the buddy system, Sinclair?” Jeremy said, with a vague shrug. “Maybe that’s childish, but honestly, wouldn’t you rather have some company?” It was almost hopeful, the way he said it. He was trying, and it was obvious. There was a voice in his head that reminded him quite frequently that she was blind, and that while she didn’t need coddling, it was better to convey these things through tone of voice. Maybe he’d get better at using voice inflections around her instead of his fidgety, nonchalant movements. He knew he’d end up running into that issue again - how he came off to people was all in the way he acted. It rarely had anything to do with his voice - he kept a cool careless air most of the time, merely out of habit. He figured he’d learn, if he was going to speak with Salem on a regular basis.
He let out a slight laugh at her teasing. “Always. That’s something you should know about me. I’m nosy as all hell,” It was true - he liked to know what was going on. He wanted in on everything. It had been that way since he was a kid. Within his family - large as it was - he was the kid who was always underfoot, always where things were happening, and always knew what the current drama was. Now, at school, it was still habit to want to know things. Rarely useful things, but things all the same.
Jeremy wasn’t all together sure that she’d meant the invitation. He debated it, honestly, truly torn. If he followed her, he’d be risking his life. If he didn’t follow her, he’d be letting a blind girl wander alone into a forest. A forest that was filled with strange creatures that could easily endanger anyone’s life. He couldn’t do that and keep a clean conscience… Besides, there was something he liked about Salem, or rather, there was something he found fascinating about her. She wasn’t particularly mean or cold to him, but she was still guarded. She had walls that he’d have to break down if he was ever going to become closer to her. He did want to be closer to her, if only for the sake of having friends, and because, quite honestly, he’d never met anyone like her before in his life. In any case, they were very different people.
And she was a girl. A lovely girl, no less. It was hard-wired into his brain to look after a girl, even if she didn’t need looking after. It was something he could blame his father for, what with his conservative and old-fashioned views on the world. It was in how he was raised. He told himself that Salem didn’t need that, and probably didn’t want it, but what did he care? He still wasn’t about to let her go wandering on her own, and he needed a nice distraction, anyway.
With a note of finality, he nodded, and said, “All right then,” He returned her smirk with one of his own, bobbing his head from side to side. “Let’s venture into the dark and hope we don’t get murdered. It’d be an awful day to get murdered, I think,” He grinned, and looked at her somewhat expectantly. “Lead the way, Sinclair. Or, wait, can I call you Salem?” He queried, once again sounding more hopeful than anything. “This last name business is a bit tiring, don’t you think?” Especially, he figured, with a last name like his. Another thing he could blame easily on his father. tag; Salem/Chii words; 744 muse; Bitchy xD lyrics; Famous Last Words - MCR notes; EONS I tell you, eons! Jeremy was a strange boy as far as Salem was concerned. But, for some reason, she didn't think that he was trying to protect her because she was blind. He seemed to have some old, chivalrous notion that she would need it-- likely, just because she was a girl to begin with. While she knew a lot of girls might have been offended or even flattered, she was amused. It was nice to think he was treating her like everyone else. It was something that didn't happen often in her life, and she would take it where she could get it.
He spoke of a "buddy system" and asked her if she wanted company. She paused in her steps, her face unreadable as she thought about it. She didn't need company, she knew that much, but did she want it? For a girl who spent her entire life in solitude, she couldn't deny that there might be something she was missing out on. "I don't know," she finally said because it was the only answer she could give him. She didn't know what she wanted, but having some company for this journey couldn't be the end of the world.
And he seemed to not mind her teasing, even going so far as to laugh about it and tease he back. She felt almost normal-- and it was one of the best feelings in the world. But she wouldn't let him know that. She never let anyone know when they made her happy or sad- even her own brother. The reason behind her thinking lay in the fact she believed you could control another person as soon as you realized you influenced their emotion. If no one knew what set her off or what made her smile, she was safe- lonely, but safe. Kyran didn't even know what lay behind her walls, and he was her twin brother.
"Better to be inquisitive than a blind follower," she smirked once more at her own reference to her blindness. She may not have her sight, but she was still able to see the world around her quite clearly. In some ways, she wondered if sight itself could be a handicap. If you were so focused on another's appearance or mannerisms, you may be able to overlook who they truly were. But then again, there were some people so excellent at acting that it became their nature to the degree they lost themselves to it. Just as she had.
Despite her oddities, he agreed to follow her. She raised a brow, but didn't question him, though she was now sure he was just as insane as she was for even contemplating this adventure. "Yes, today is a particularly horrid day for being murdered. According to divination, today is a day for death by a giant spider-- we're looking for an acromantula web," she offered up the information voluntarily. If he was really going to be accompanying her and not trying to haul her back up to the castle, then he had the right to know why she was in here. "Alright, Jeremy?" she turned that smirk back on him, answering his question in her own way, daring him to back down now that he knew what they were going to be going up against.
