There isn't really anything positive to say about Abel O'Hara save for the fact he has a brilliant mind. There is a reason he is in Ravenclaw, and that is because he is good at thinking outside of the box. He's a rather odd youth, though not mad like some at the school. He tends to have a different thought process, however, though admittedly, that's not that unusual in the wizarding world. He often finds himself philosophical and questioning the world around him.
Since he has been a child, he has been very ill with the rare Laemya disease. It is a condition that has caused him much pain and grief through the years characterized by many horrific symptoms, the least of which is tiredness and fatigue with the occasional loss of consciousness. The worst being the searing pains in his chest which he has described as feeling like his heart is being squeezed by someone's fist and the black liquid that flows from his eyes and under his veins. It's enough to make classmates who have seen a worse side of him scared to be around him.
Due to the disease driving most wizards and witches to madness (sometimes subsequent early deaths), there is little literature on the subject, only that it does not appear to be transferable through person-to-person contact. However, the disease has shaped his early life and left him in a fragile state of mind. He is quick to snap to judgments with people and becomes hostile when he feels threatened. He would rather chase off a potential friend than be hurt by an enemy in disguise.
Abel O'Hara was born to a muggle mother and wizard father on the shores of Ireland. As a child, he was always seen as sickly and weak. It was possibly his magic's manifestation as a child, seeing as he never had many odd happenings, but he was often bed-ridden and many times doctors were certain he was nearing his end days. The combination wealth between his father and mother got him the best doctors and healers there were in Britain.
Still, he suffered from the illness and more than once doctors and healers said that he would not make it through the night. By the time he was old enough to go to Hogwarts, the healers had came to their only conclusion. It was his blood that was strange and may have been making him ill, it was the only explanation. A porous, thick black substance that clots and doesn't bleed easily- he was just one of the unfortunate children in the magical world to contract the disease in the mother's womb. With little literature on the subject of Laemya, most of the cases appearing in Asia and Eastern Europe, there weren't many courses of action to take.
However, being out in nature seemed to help him, so his father often tried to make sure that he was out in the sunlight rather than confined to a dark room in bed. As a child, he often used a wheelchair to get around, as his legs were so weak, but as he started to become healthier, he learned how to walk without assistance and eventually started to live a, well, relatively normal life. His shortcomings were only in his shortness of breath, tendency to faint, dizziness, and the fact he has an almost insatiable hunger.
With that weight off his shoulders, he attended his first year of Hogwarts in bright spirits and started to try to do more things. He practiced Quidditch with his housemates and tried out for the team every year until year 3 when he became seeker. Despite being good at it, he is always fearful of falling from his broom when he gets out of breath. He has never once fainted while in the air, but it is a risk he is taking in order to try to seem normal.
It should be noted that he doesn't have very many friends. He has been severely bullied (though perhaps not so much as the notorious Severus Snape), so he has finally stopped trying. Some of his classmates remember him from childhood and often don't bother to conceal his once short-comings despite the fact he's trying to improve. He isn't the kindest of boys due to this and often sulks around the school, scowling at others. However, he's a 5th year now and his health has unexpectedly begun to fail again. Perhaps it's due to stress, or perhaps it's due to growing up- but something needs to be done to help him, he just doesn't know how much more he can take.
