The hospital wing wasn't full of students this time of year. That normally happened in the later months of winter- January and February after the students had been cooped up in the same castle for so long. But Abel was there because he'd had one of his little fainting spells after a particularly long day out in the sun. Sunlight made him feel healthy and bright, but too much of it had him feeling sick and ill for days.
He couldn't quite say what was happening to him. He drank the calming brew made for him by the lead healer and relaxed against the bed until it was time for him to leave which didn't take too long. He was a regular in the hospital wing, and he pretty much came and went as he pleased these days. It was just second nature. The calming brew worked only for so long, soon he'd be anxious, angry, and hungry again.
To be quite fair, there wasn't a moment that went by that he didn't feel like he was starving. He stood and stretched, cracking his bones as he did. For being so active he was still in relatively poor shape from all of his time bedridden as a child.
"Thank you, Madame Pomfrey, I'm sure I'll return in a few days," he gave the woman a half smile and grabbed his bags, making his way out of the room when he quite literally tripped over himself and everything went flying. He hissed as he caught himself poorly on his wrist. He almost bit his tongue, but the last time he'd drawn blood he'd gotten sick from the taste of it.
He rubbed at his sore wrist and frowned, scooting back against the wall. No one was around to watch him, so he could rest there a minute more before venturing to the great hall to dinner. It would be an early night for him tonight, and his essay would just have to wait until the morning before class to be written.

Luca often spends his time in the greenhouses, keeping the Herbology professor company--or perhaps it was the other way around. It didn't really matter. The professor either felt sorry for him, or was genuinely interested--which didn't matter either, though the former idea stung his pride a little--and often asked about the herbs the Romani used. Luca then in turn tried to absorb any knowledge the professor could give him about magical herbs, or foreign herbs that his family didn't have the ability to acquire.
Today was such a day. They'd spent hours sharing information back and forth, until the professor stopped, seeming to remember something, then showed him how to cut dittany. a healing plant brought in from Crete, then asked him to take the batch up to Madame Pomfrey in the Hospital Wing. Luca wasn't accustomed to running errands, but he supposed it meant that the professor trusted him not to be a liar and a thief, unlike the majority of the people he encountered at Hogwarts.
He gave a slight smile, nodded, "Yes, professor." then excused himself and left the greenhouse with the medium box held securely in both hands. The professor had made it seem important that he was not to jostle them.
Luca had wanted to stay and ask the professor to tell him everything there was to be known about this dittany, but since he'd been rushed off, he had to think back and try to remember whether it had been mentioned in Herbology class before. It had to have been...the name sounded so familiar.
Dittany...dittany...dittany...
The boy remained lost in thought as he made his way up to the Hospital Wing, though he was very mindful of the box, and only snapped out of it when he nearly tripped over someone's feet. He'd stopped just in time, but nearly lost his balance anyway. "Woa..."
Grey eyes blinked slowly then settled on the boy sitting against the wall near the doors leading into the Hospital Wing. Luca wasn't cross, but curiosity was enough to make him take a pause from his errand long enough to find out why someone would choose such a s place to rest, "Rather odd place to sit."
After a moment's consideration, he decided to add an "Are you alright?" since the boy was sitting near the Hospital Wing and all...

Feeling sleepy and ready to close his eyes, Abel leaned back against the wall further, tilting his head back slowly and exposing his neck to the cool air of the castle. It was nice and relaxing, he had to admit, even though most other students wouldn't find it comfortable at all. Maybe he was just exhausted from lack of sleep and being so hungry recently. He was low on energy, so he'd have to have a big meal at the great hall.
A voice shattered his peace, though, commenting offhandedly on his decision to sit against the wall. "Well, it's a good thing no one is forcing you to sit against the wall," Abel quipped his response, not at all amused at being singled out. It was likely the Hufflepuff boy meant no harm by the comment, but Abel was quick to become defensive at the slightest hint that there was an undertone of rudeness. "I was tired, so I decided to sit down, is that not allowed now?" this time the words were accompanied by a roll of the eyes.
However, his upright posture was compromised as he started to cough violently, his lungs feeling pain from not enough air being pulled into them. It was so very painful and constricting, and he didn't understand why. He was breathing normally and not short of breath, or so he thought, yet his lungs burned with the agony of running for miles. He put a hand at his chest and tried to force air inside, gripping at his uniform and pulling at the material in vain.
Finally, he could feel the oxygen pour into them, and he started to gasp for breath, looking wildly around. Of all times for it to happen, why had there had to been a stranger around? Even the boys of the 5th year Ravenclaw dormitories would have understood, they'd known Abel since they were all young children sitting at the Great Hall's table for the first night at Hogwarts. "...I came... from the Hospital Wing..." he managed to say, feeling ashamed that his guard had been so easily broken. Why his body had cursed him with this disease, he knew not.

Luca allowed his eyes to slip along the curve of the other's neck, which he'd left very temptingly exposed. His grip tightened on the box, and he had to take a deep breath. A soft laugh burst from his laugh at the other boy's first words, and he shook his head slightly, "Of course it's allowed." He tilted his head to the side, taking in more of his appearance. Luca began to ask, "Were you on your way to the--?" but was cut off by the other boy's violent coughing fit.
The amusement left his eyes, and he took a step closer, eyes gone wide. If the coughing fit didn't stop within the next few moments, Luca told himself that he would run to the Hospital Wing for help. He felt useless, looking on as the Ravenclaw struggled to breathe. Another step brought him closer to the other boy, and he kneeled down, still holding the box in both hands.
Luckily the Ravenclaw started breathing normally again and regained his abiility to speak. "It looks to me...like you left the Hospital Wing too soon." He wasn't usually the type to butt into other people's business, but it wasn't every day that he was confronted with such an evident display of ill health. "I'm headed to the Hospital Wing now to drop this off," He motioned to the box with his chin, "I could help you get back there, if you like."

"No..." Abel answered as he caught his breath. He wasn't quite sure why the stranger was showing so much concern for him, but he supposed the other was an older student, judging by his height and broad shoulders. He started to try to push himself up, using the wall for support as he clutched at it. "This is normal... I should probably eat something- I'm starving," he added the last bit just as his legs started to buckle from underneath him.
"It will go away when I eat," he repeated, as if saying the words would make them come true. He was frustrated by his own inability to stand up straight without the help of the wall, and for a moment, his eyes flickered to Luca as if to ask for help, but soon it was gone. He clenched his jaw firmly and started to walk away from the scene, leaning against the wall to support his frail body.
Luca could go to the Hospital Wing and come back, and Abel wouldn't have made much progress to the Great Hall. He was having to walk slowly because the room seemed to be spinning around him. Perhaps he should go back, but he couldn't remember which way was back, and he couldn't remember the turns he'd taken.
No, he didn't need anyone's help to do this. He could do it on his own. But as he neared the staircase, he could feel it start to rumble beneath him. He clutched onto the railing but his foot slipped out from under him. This would be embarrassing- as the staircase started to move he lost his grip on the railing and fell backwards.

He wasn't all too surprised that the other boy refused, Abel did seem like the independent type. It bothered him to just crouch there while the Ravenclaw struggled to push himself up to his feet. He had to consciously stop himself from setting down the box and lift the other boy up by his arms. Well, he supposed if the other boy was hungry, it was common to become dizzy and need to sit down. But it didn't explain the coughing fit. Luca was curious, which was odd for him when it came to things other than herbs and books.
Luca twitched as he instinctively started to move to help Abel when it seemed like his legs wouldn't hold him up. Luckily the other boy managed to stand on his own, because Luca would have dropped the box of dittany. He did see the very brief look Abel gave him, but felt frozen in place. The cues he was getting from the Ravenclaw were very conflicted; help me, don't help me, help me, don't help me. It was all very confusing to Luca.
When Abel pushed off the wall and headed down the hall, Luca figured to just let him go and eat. Perhaps eating really would help the boy. Pushing himself up, Luca shook his head, watched the other boy make his way down the hall, then sighed and headed for the Hospital Wing.
Once he'd finished with giving Madame Pomfrey the box of dittany, he made for the great hall himself. All that talk of eating and made him realize how hungry he was himself. He supposed he shouldn't be surprised to encounter that boy again on his way there, with how slow he was moving. He made it onto the staircase just before it started moving, and was right behind Abel when the other boy lost his balance. Luca hurried down the three stairs separating them, and caught him as he made it half-way to the floor. The movement of the staircase, and the extra weight made him lose his balance, and he fell onto his back with Abel on him.

Before his head could hit the stairs, strong arms wrapped around him and he found himself falling back onto another's body. It cushioned his fall, but he was certain it must have been hell for whoever it was holding him. As soon as the stairs stopped rumbling and locked into place, he lifted himself up, glancing back. He wasn't sure if he was surprised or not to see the Hufflepuff boy staring back at him with that vacant expression of his. But rather than being rude to him, Abel knew he owed him thanks for preventing injury.
"...Thanks,", that was so eloquent to say. Abel sighed and stood up, still clutching the stairwell and reaching his hand down to help Luca up. Now that the other had saved him from injury, he supposed he owed him somehow. Oh how he hoped he wasn't a jerk.
"I'm Abel, by the way," he introduced himself once the other boy was standing. "Abel O'Hara, a Ravenclaw 5th year." he clarified further. The O'Hara name was nothing special and he doubted the other had heard of him unlike some of the pureblood families that attended the school. He was a half blood and that's all there was to it, nothing special in the end. He shifted his feet awkwardly, occasionally glancing up at Luca for a response.
He was pretty short for a boy his age, but he still had some growing to do. His hair was black as ebony and his eyes a pale grey. His skin was ghostly white, like he'd never seen a day of sun. If he had been a pretty girl, one might have compared him to Snow White. But as it were, he was a young lad and the comparison would have genuinely insulted him. Honestly, there were far more feminine boys at the school like that Slytherin boy "devil" or something.
"Would you like to accompany me to the Great Hall for dinner..?" he extended the invitation wearily. He mostly sad alone by choice or with other boys in his year, though he didn't contribute much to conversation because he didn't like getting close to people. Besides, he knew they all called him a freak behind his back.

Luca groaned, having hit the stairs hard enough to know that he would have bruises in multiple places. When the boy on top of him turned his head to look back, Luca tried to force a smile, but only managed to release another groan in stead.
His brows rose when the other thanked him. He hadn't expected it from the Ravenclaw, judging from how he'd behaved earlier. Though he supposed the other boy could simply be in a foul mood due to being hungry, or unwell, and it wasn't fair to judge him from only that one encounter. He sat up when Abel got off him, then took the hand he offered, and grabbed the railing with his other hand. Once he was standing, he dusted himself off, then rubbed the back of his head where it'd bounced off a stone stair.
"Nice to meet you Abel. I'm Luca...Buckland." He wasn't too accustomed to giving his surname as well. "Hufflepuff, 6th year." Luca wouldn't have thought to give these details if the other boy hadn't set the example.
His hand continued moving unconsciously over the back of his head, eyes narrowed slightly. They widened when the other boy spoke again. Abel managed to surprise him yet again, and it made him pause before answering, "Yes...I would like that." Luca sometimes sat with two or three people from his House, or alone. He wondered whether they'd sit at Ravenclaw table or Hufflepuff table.

"Well, it's nice to meet you Luca Buckland..." Abel trailed off awkwardly. It wasn't like he was a social butterfly, but he'd seen enough of other people interacting to get the gist of what was considered polite.
Of course, Abel rarely concerned himself with being polite. He was known for his scowling nature and judgmental looks towards his peers. That is to say, he wasn't popular among them at all. He assumed that Luca wouldn't be quite like the others though, given that he had actually put himself in some sort of harm's way to "save" him. Had he been a girl, he'd considered the action chivalrous. However, since he was not, he wasn't sure what to make of it.
He continued to grip the railing, but stayed close to Luca now that they were both on their feet and continued to walk, not asking for assistance. As soon as they reached the Great Hall he would find a bite to eat and this insatiable hunger would be quelled for a little while. At the very least he wouldn't feel as if he were about the pass out on the spot. While he was oftentimes embarrassed by his condition, he was more out to be annoyed with it.
Well, as long as it didn't interfere with Quidditch matches, and so far it only briefly had. Usually the adrenaline was enough to keep his mind elsewhere so that it would not focus on the negatives, but he wasn't a very optimistic, positive person so when there was nothing to keep him busy, he dwelled on unpleasant matters.
Upon reaching the Great Hall Abel took a seat towards the end of the table away from others. The only times houses were really separated were during events, so he didn't take care to realize where he had taken a seat- it just was away from people who would get on his nerves. "...Thank you again, I mean it." he said, fidgeting awkwardly, unsure of how to continue their conversation. "So... uh... Hufflepuff. That's... nice," god, he was so inept at interacting with others. It was embarrassing. "Pureblood? Half? Muggleborn?" he asked curiously.
