"Sirius was a brave, clever, and energetic man, and such men are not usually content to sit at home in hiding while they believe others to be in danger." - Albus Dumbledore
Even if he hasn't left Hogwarts yet, Sirius Black has already managed to make a name for himself in the wizarding world. The rebel. The Muggle-lover. The prankster. The blood-traitor. His name usually precedes him and especially in a tight-knit community like Hogwarts, there is probably nobody who hasn't heard of him and has a certain pre-conceived notion about Sirius. Yet the people who can say they really know him remain few in number as the young man is rather secretive, despite his outgoing and boisterous demeanor. The infamous Marauders are probably the only ones Sirius would trust unconditionally, and his loyalty to them would go to great lenghts.
To others, he's mostly known as a prankster with James Potter at his side, as the two get into trouble and detention more often than not. It isn't as if he doesn't like school or classes. Rather the opposite is the case. The Gryffindor feels that Hogwarts is his true home, the only home he's really known, and is deeply appreciative of what the school has given him. The classes he enjoys - Transfigurations and Defense Against Dark Arts - he is quite exceptionally good at.Yet he doesn't have much of a work/studying ethics to speak of and chooses to embrace the more fun side of life and magic whenever he feels bored. Still, he gets by without getting terrible marks. Since he isn't a hard worker perse, his achievements are due to his quick wit and high intelligence.
More often than not, he can be seen in the company of his clique, yet he seeks out solitude at times, too. Whenever he feels he needs to think, he resorts to spending time on his own, an old habit from his childhood. At times like that, Sirius likes to turn into his animagus form and run around the grounds of Hogwarts or listening to his Muggle music records. Which isn't to say he doesn't share it with his friends. He'd impose his musical taste on the willing or unwilling ones any day.
All in all, he does mostly live up to the expectations the people have when they hear of his reputation. Sirius is a smart young man with an unwavering moral compass (for the most part; sometimes he does tend to not notice when a prank borders on cruelty) and isn't afraid to speak his mind nor stand up for his friends or what he believes it, be it metaphorically or with force, if needed.
The past of Sirius Black has become history and somewhat of a myth among both the pureblood elitists as well as their opposition. But it all had to begin somewhere.
Born into the "Noble and Most Ancient House of Black" as the first son and heir of Walburga and Orion Black, Sirius had certain expectations to fill. Luckily for the parents, the boy was all they had hoped for: he was energetic, smart and magically apt from early childhood. All they could have hoped for. Unluckily for Sirius though, his natural intelligence and curiosity developed quickly and he started quesioning the familie's beliefs. Soon enough, he concluded that he not only didn't agree with them, but found them detestable.
From that point on, Sirius has lead a pretty miserable and lonely childhood. Nothing about the riches and prestige of the Black family excited him, knowing that it was held together by pureblood supremacist views. The feeling of alienation was only made worse by the presence of his younger brother Regulus, who seemed to be accepting all of the theories as gospel. At times, he tried to explain all of the implications of the family values to his brother, only to find more or less deaf ears. And thus, he was left feeling misunderstood by his most immediate surroundings and wishing for a different life.
His wish was to be granted on his first day at Hogwarts when he was sorted into the Gryffindor house. It was a true blessing to the boy who finally found like-minded peers and even role models among the teachers. But as for the rest of the Black family, who were traditionally sorted into the Slytherin house, it was a start of a tragedy. Sirius didn't let the threatening and begging letters from home distract him from what was really important and quickly became friends with three boys from his house: James Potter, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew.
The days and weeks seemed to fly by while Sirius was having so much fun with the Marauders - how the infamous quartett decided to call themselves. Especially James seemed to be up to causing mischief, which suited Sirius just fine, seeing how he hadn't had much of a careless childhood before attending Hogwarts. But their group wasn't all about pranks. They learned about their friend Remus being a warewolf pretty soon and were determined to help him from that point on. The thought had to remain a generous notion up until their fifth year when they found out about magic that could turn them into Animagi.
With the life he had built for himself at Hogwarts, Sirius started dreading going back home more each time. Tensions were getting high as the eldest son refused to remain silent about his disagreement with the familie's beliefs any longer and started expressing his rebellious Muggle-loving views loudly and in front of guests, even. Up until after his fifth year the situation at home got so bad that Sirius decided to move out, break all ties to his family and move in with James Potter's family, who had graciously welcomed him into their family.
