This year was supposed to be different yes, but not this type of different. The scowl setting upon her lush mouth was matched only in depth by the storm brewing behind her pale eyes. Pandorah was very unhappy and that wasn't usually a good thing. Alone. This was how she worked and how she liked things. The fact that she felt lonely more often than not as she got older meant nothing, people were just pathetic and sad for the most part, not to mention flipping stupid.
For the first project of the year however, in one of the classes she actually enjoyed, she was to be paired with a partner. Oh and not just any partner of course but one of the people she wasn't too entirely fond of. Then again was there anyone that she was fond of? To be fair, and sometimes she really could be on that rare occasion, neither of them had been all that happy about being paired together. Both had complained that they could do just fine, perhaps even better, by themselves. In the end the teacher was not moved by their words and they were still stuck together. Pandorah Koenig and Severus Snape, partners in the first project of sixth year in the Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
So, since they had to be stuck together Pan immediately went about making a plan. At least they could get this done and over with and move on, she knew he wouldn't screw around and could pull his own weight. If any thought was a comfort that would be.
She had sent him a note to meet her at a time she was sure he didn't have any classes either, so they could discuss the project and hopefully get everything started. This meant that the two of them would need to be alone and in a relatively quiet space, an idea that made her shudder inwardly. Being alone with anyone just sat odd with her and oh how she wished she could just have books with her for this, and maybe she wouldn't envision stabbing him in the eye over and over with her wand...maybe.
Still she sat down in a part of the courtyard that was relatively clean for sitting and also pretty vacant. It was nice actually, with the cooler weather and the sun in the sky still. For a moment she just closed her eyes and sat there, a serene expression on her face as the warmth penetrated her skin. She was better then this and it needed to be done. Maybe she could find a way to enjoy it? This was what she got for wanting things to be different.

If Pandorah thought that she was displeased with this arrangement, she had yet to know how completely and utterly incensed Severus Snape was.
He did not enjoy working with others on his assignments. He did his things his way and did not have time or patience to wait for dunderheads to understand things he grasped immediately. Severus had never worked well with anyone and his curt attitude and biting commentaries had made him somewhat of a pariah in class. Students didn't generally volunteer to work with him and he was fine with that. Other than Lily, who seemed to understand his unorthodox methods without him even needing to explain them, he had no patience for partners on school assignments and this was no different.
He was walking to go and meet her where she said she would be, in the courtyard. This just added to his frustration and anger at this particular arrangement, why was she the one telling him where to go and bloody fucking why were they doing this outside? Especially in a place as public as the courtyard.
He cursed the Ravenclaw girl as he continued down the corridor, pace brisk, looking tense as ever. Severus turned a corner sharply, expression souring as he stepped into the well lit outdoor area. Adjusting his old schoolbag, dark eyes skimmed the courtyard immediately resting on her (not that she was hard to miss she was so tall).
He strode toward her, looking thoroughly displeased and stood in front of her, blocking the sun like a spindly shadow.
"Alright Koenig." He said flatly, expression slightly impatient, "Lets get this over with."

Of course the one moment where she would be somewhat relaxing had to be completely shattered by the person she was forced to be partnered with. The sun was blocked out and icy pale eyes opened slowly to fix upon the face of the intruding interloper. He was supposed to be here yes but that did not mean he had to be a complete and total jerk about it. Then again when wasn't he a jerk to pretty much everyone? Not that she could say much because she was pretty rude for the most part as well and she was even bossier then most with being a prefect.
Her upper lip curled and her expression bordered on violence for just a brief moment, a slight indication that the cold and icy Ravenclaw princess had other facets of her personality. “My sentiments exactly Snape. Neither of us wishes to be burdened with the other so the sooner we get this accomplished, the better.” Her educated voice showcasing her German accent well. It wasn't as thick or as bad as it used to be when she first came here but it was still there and would probably never leave.
Sasha, her Turkish Angora, began to wind her way around her mistresses ankles, sensing her distress and Pandorah ran her long pale fingers through the felines fur as a means of comfort for the both of them. Through everything and every year here the cat was her constant companion. Even as her body bloomed, which it had already started to do when she first got here, she was alone. Mostly through choice. Many guys had asked her out and sometimes she had laughed and other times she had done nothing at all and simply walked past them. It would take a lot to really get her attention, because she wasn't blind to attraction. There were in fact a few boys she thought rather pleasing to her eyes but they were stupid. Was it so hard for good looks and intelligence to be combined in one individual?
Frowning deeply she made herself comfortable on the ground and brought out some things to take notes on. He was smart, she was smart...it would be idiotic of her to not write down anything he made come up with. Pandorah may not be happy that she was paired with him, or well anyone for that matter, but she was not about to throw a fit about it now. Truth was if she had to be paired with anyone she was rather glad, though admitting it would only be on threat of death, that it had to be him and not someone else.
“So, since we have to come up with a scenario where we cancel each other out, without harming anyone around us...” She trailed off and looked around at everyone else. It wasn't that she was meaning them specifically, but their classmates, it had been one of the rules or, guidelines as it were. Unfortunately for the both of them it couldn't be so simple as she cast and he cast and boom, it's done. There had to be more flair to it. Why? She had no idea, their teacher liked flair it seemed.
When she was thinking, and working, she had no idea how focused she looked. Pan knew she was an attractive girl but honestly how was that important right now? Even so she still took good care of her body and made sure she looked good. A wonderful mind should not be housed in a sloppy body. So the leggy brunette did her best to make sure that the outside matched her well...inside so to speak.

HIs sharp gaze noted as she withdrew a piece of parchment and quill, a frown set deep into his features as he did so. So she did intend to stay out here in the harsh relief of sunlight that the courtyard offered, surrounded by the milling masses of students and their respective noises slapping off the sides of the stone.
"We will take our work down to the lake if it is your intention to be outside." He said in a clipped tone, "I do not relish the particular thought of having such interruptions distracted me from study." He would not bend on this. The noise of the students was chaffing enough, but he did not particularly fancy having an audience. He was a reclusive sort of person, and other people tended to annoy him.
He had had Defense with Koenig since first year, since Ravenclaw's and Slytherin's had that class together once a week, but he had never had to go into extensive conversation with her before, in fact he wondered if he had said a single word to her even once. He knew that some of his housemates found her attractive, based of common room talk, but Severus never paid attention to anything that did not concern him or Lily and he definitely did not stoop to conversations over topics as banal as 'looks'.
"Yes," he drawled dryly, giving her a flat look, "That is in fact the instructions as given to us by our professor."
What a ridiculous assignment, if one were actually in a situation where one needed to defeat an enemy chances were that at least one of them would not care if bystanders were injured. Their professor truly had such a simple-minded sense of how the world worked.
However he would not work here, there were people down at the lake as well if they really needed test subjects.
He turned swiftly on heel, cutting a line toward the grounds, not bothering to wait to see if Koenig was following him. She could do what she liked, after-all he would have this assignment finished much quicker without someone else hindering him.

If she had to be stuck with someone why did it have to be him? Earlier she had thought that it was better to be Snape, because he was smart and a hard worker but really there was no way they were going to get along and not strangle each other through this damned project. Looking up and seeing the frown on his face, one of the only expressions he ever wore unless he was with that flame haired Gryffindor, caused her ire to spark up and she bit her tongue and gripped the parchment so hard that her fingers tore through it. This was not going to end well as it was already beginning badly.
Oh now he was calling the shots was he? She stood slowly, thinking that it was about time that he had a piece of her mind but thought better of it. There was no way this damned project was going to get done if they were too busy snarking at each other or otherwise being rude and mean. Her eyes gave him a look like he was a fly that she could and really wanted to easily swat aside. One eyebrow arched up haughtily and her lips formed a sneer as she looked him over before rolling her eyes and letting her expression fall back into neutral territory.
The smile that reached her face, and definitely did not touch her eyes, twitched at the corners to his dry comment. Did anyone like this sniveling pissant of a wizard? Would anyone miss him? Suddenly she appeared thoughtful then predatory as her twitching grin turned into something rather wolfish and wide. Still she said nothing and actually began to follow him without a protest. Her fantasies of murdering him in many different and outrageous ways just may keep her sane in his company right now. If not, she was going to throttle him, blame it on something else and do the project on her own.
People were staring as they made their way and she could hear them starting up rumors. Twice she stopped to glare them to silence and a third time she even threatened a lower classman with public humiliation if he even thought to spread a rumor about her and Snape. “I am only with this pathetic thing because I am being forced to, plain and simple. Could you really see someone like me...with someone like him?” Rolling her eyes she barked out a laugh and finally made it to where he was.
“Fine, now that we are here how would you like to go about doing this? You will fail, and so will I, if you do not work with me and I will not let your misplaced pride and arrogant idiocy cause me to fail.” The last sentence was hissed out violently and she almost seemed on the verge of actual physical violence but took a few steps back and forth to calm herself down. She would not let him cause her to get her first bad mark ever.

He continued, giving little thought to the dark girl following behind him. Koenig had looked less than amused, but he found her of little consequence and was not intimidated. How could she possibly be anything close to the types of people he shared living quarters with? He had seen things, dark things of which she could not barely begin to fathom.
But her footsteps behind him, crunching against the stone pathway down to the lake told him that she was indeed following him.
If he was forced to do this assignment with her he was going to get it done in as little time as possible. He glowered threateningly at a group of third year Hufflepuff's who immediately skirted out of his way, staring at the pair as they made their way down toward the waterfront.
The day was beautiful, bright and crisp, the sun high and blinding in the sky. Students milled about, occasional laughter drifting on the breeze and up towards them. His scowl only deepened.
Pandorah threatened the group of Hufflepuffs, and her words made him snort out loud, fingers itching for the wand in his pocket. No wonder he had never talked to her before, she was already proving to be incredibly loud and bothersome.
As for the actual words themselves...they didn't really bother Severus. He was used to hearing such things and six years in he was numb enough to the way he was talked about at school.
He set his old, ripped up school bag on the ground, turning to face her. In the sunlight he was like a specter, a tall, dark figure that seemed more at home in shadows than in bright daylight. "We will not fail." He said, dark gaze watching her, voice assured. Severus would never settle with a poor mark, it was not his way. "The incantation is simple enough, our job is to recite it properly in order to use it against one another." He looked to the side, eyes catching on a group of students much further away, "They are close enough to be within the spells range, if done correctly our magic should only affect us." He took out his dusky, brown wand, and shook long hair from his face. "Thoughts?"

There was something in the air this year. Her temper kept flaring up and down and she kept thinking thoughts that normally would not be plaguing her. If she had a friend, a real close one, she may explain things to them, talk to them and try to find out their thoughts on the subject matter. However she did not have any close anythings, and she was just beginning to cultivate something like a friendship with one of Severus's housemates in fact. This must be what other girls liked, what they looked forward to.
Really she wanted to try and enjoy doing this assignment and not growl and bark back and forth with him. It seemed like such a waste really. Not that she wanted to make friends and be happy and merry but just be able to not have a headache and to get through it with as little hassle as possible. Her anger had left, it came and then went like it was nothing but that was how it usually did. Unless there was a continual push from an outside force she would lash out and be done with it. Being able to growl at the Hufflepuffs had taken the edge off.
Severus had a serious problem, and she was not it. If he continued to become nasty with her she would complain tot he teacher that he made it impossible to get the job done. When you had homicidal thoughts about a classmate it was time to move away from them right? Taking a deep breath she settled her mind and looked him over, appraising him for the moment. He wasn't ugly but he was a bit...mish mash. He needed mending, probably inside and out really.
Pandorah knew she had to get her head in the game but was finding it hard lately. Preoccupied with the way that boys looked and treated her, was she coming into her femininity or something? How droll, and annoying.
In contrast to his battered school bag, Pandorah set her obviously brand new and probably too expensive to think about one near his. Not for comparison reasons obviously, because she paid it no attention otherwise. So he said they will not fail, good. She never accepted failure and never would, even if pushing to pass, to make something of herself she ended up expiring. The leggy Ravenclaw would do whatever it took to pass with flying colors.
“Should we start out casting it against each other at the same time?” Yes, she was asking him what he thought, which she normally wouldn't have but that was part of the whole new year idea. That and the best way for them to not kill each other would be to see what the other thought. There would be no easy way unless they respected one another. She pulled out her own wand and flicked it a few times, the wood was a soft tan color and didn't move when she shook out her wrist. It was a notoriously tough wood, along with it's core, but she was an incredibly strong-willed and stubborn female.
“If they get hit then we did it wrong. If they don't then we are good. We should try it several times to be safe.” her face remained impassive but perhaps the twinkle in her eye was visible. Not that she wanted to seriously injure the other kids but she definitely wouldn't mind giving them a shock or something. Pandorah readied her wand and her body in a proper stance for what was to be a duel, and watched from the corner of her eye as kids stopped and began to whisper. The sneer that lit upon her lips was anything but friendly.
It seemed that the her she was away from home and the one that she was here at Hogwarts were starting to merge.

Severus nodded tersely, noting nothing wrong with the girls logic. He knew Koenig was capable enough and was not so worried about having to wait patiently for her to grasp a concept that he calculated to be simple enough in his own mind.
His thumb traced the smooth groove in the handle of his wand, where he had frequently done just this. Going back to the incredibly muggle home he lived in, Severus found great comfort in the light, familiar, weight of his hemlock wand. It was a tool perfect for potions and darker, ancient magics, able to hold its own and produce powerful results. The long haired Slytherin had always taken great care of it.
"So we must practice casting at different ranges and record our findings and observations on the chart." He waved his wand, using a nonverbal to summon the parchment and his quill. Tobias hated anything to do with magic, and had forbid Severus' mother from using it in the house. Not that she probably could do much magic anymore, Severus could barely remember her doing anything save a basic pepper-up potion. However since he lived in a residence with a witch, Severus was able to use magic and brew to his hearts content without worrying about the trace and he had practiced formulating his own spells and tweaking the potions in his mothers old copy of their sixth year textbook.
He cast a nonverbal muffliato around them, a spell of his own invention, that would keep outsiders from hearing their conversations. He disliked people listening in on what he was saying, even if it was only trivial conversation about a school assignment.

Her pale eyes were on him but not judging, she was listening. Her face expressionless, calm. There were not many times that she had expressions like these and would pay attention to her peers. They had to be outstanding in their work for her to even acknowledge them really. So, whether he knew it or not, Pandorah was simply showcasing that she understood he was smart in this particular subject. In fact she knew that Snape was quite possibly one of the best barring a few others. That didn't mean that they would get along though but just that she would give credit where it was due.
One brow arched upward when he cast the spell. No comment came from the Ravenclaw however, just idle curiosity. He wasn't a popular boy, he didn't get along with many people, if any that she could think of save for that redheaded Gryffindor girl. Plus he was intensely private, so it made a bit of sense.
Long fingers caressed her wand almost intimately as she waited on him to be ready. Looking between the both of them she pondered starting out farther then working their way closer. “How about we start out at a distance and then work our way closer to one another by five feet each?” She had already started to step back, paying attention to where she was going and how far apart they would be. “Does fifty feet apart sound good enough or do you think we should go farther?”
Now she was asking for his opinion to start. This was how she was trying to compromise and work through their assignment. If things could progress at this pace they could possibly get it done without killing one another and pass with flying colors this project. That would please her immensely.
Afterward she would have to talk to some people who were watching them and try to stave off the rumor mill. It was a detestable thing and she hated it but it seemed teenagers of all types got to talking, muggles or wizards.

Pandorah was intelligent enough that Severus had yet to loose his patience, however he was still barbed and tense, practically waiting to leap for the moment he would need to throw an insult back in her face. It took great effort to push away thoughts of wiping that haughty smirk off of....
Well she didn't seem to look as haughty as she had whilst prancing her way down to the waterfront. Severus studied her features suspiciously for a moment, before giving a curt nod at her words, "Fifty feet is a satisfactory place to begin." The long haired Slytherin answered, his grip tightening on the hemlock wand.
His whole body felt tense and he stared her down with an intensely distrusting and unwavering gaze. Watching every subtle movement with sharp, dark eyes. It was too uncomfortably like awaiting an attack. Severus was shabby and unkempt looking, a sullen boy, but his eyes were fierce and there was a hard edge to him, blade-like and dangerous. If she were to attack him, he would have the countercurse on his lips before she even moved.
"Let's begin." He said, and his voice was like iron.

Her brows drew together and she was a bit curious but otherwise said nothing. She knew he was teased, mercilessly so in fact, so that probably explained why he was so venomous with everyone around him, everyone but Lily Evans that is. She wondered why they were so close, the Gryffindor Prefect and the Slytherin bully bag. One thing was for sure, she was not about to ask him that. It was time to get down to business and he was far too crabby at the best of times for her to bother him with such trivialities.
The problem with most people was that she didn't give them a chance. Pandorah judged everyone on sight and it usually only got worse as time progressed. Though she had nothing against ethnicity, gender or whatever they liked to wake up next to, that wasn't the point. It was how they held themselves, how the dressed...first impressions were for life. This was also why she had the reputation of just being a cold bitch, harsh and uncaring. Most people didn't even register to her unless they could be impressive in some way. She of of Severus Snape simply because he was smart. All the other things she had heard well...who knew what was fact or fiction.
Oddly enough she didn't believe he would do anything untoward with her. He just wasn't the type so long as you didn't provoke it, and she wasn't doing that. He agreed to the spacing apart and she made sure to check it over so that they were enough apart to equal fifty feet.
“Yes, let us begin.” Immediately everything changed about her. Her stance was of an actual fighters, eyes unwavering and calculating and wand at the ready. There were a lot of things hidden inside of her that she rarely let show, Snape was going to see one of them. Pandorah Koenig was a snake in the grass, a cunning and manipulative wizard who was very dangerous. With a flick of her wrist and a subtle word she cast the spell they were told to counteract back in class. It was a well known spell but they were needing to find different ways of handling it without harming anyone around them, and of course not themselves.
The spell wasn't too terribly powerful because the teacher didn't want them actually seriously injuring anyone, but it was still something that could harm if not careful. She wanted to not be careful, to mess up simply to see what would happen if it hit someone. This chaos theory, her need to explore and learn everything regardless of what it caused, may be the reason she was in Ravenclaw. She cared more about learning then people, at least for now.
[ooc: so I am just making shit up with this. Not listing anything in particular lol. I hope that is okay with you. Lemme know what you think okay? If you need something solid I can figure something out.]

They continued in this fashion, carefully controlled spells meeting at an equidistant point between them. They were wary of one another, both not without reason, both rather distrustful sorts especially of one another.
However Severus knew that Pandorah was as ready as he was when it came to defense, and any imbecile would be able to see that he was on edge, like a bird tensed for flight. It would have been foolhardy to attack him, and it would incautious of him to go after her. The Ravenclaw and the Slytherin were an an uneasy peace and Severus was intent on getting this assignment done as quickly as possible.
"I think that suffices at this distant." He said shortly, nodding to her and watching with a heedful gaze. He lowered his wand and tapped the parchment, murmuring over the paper. Sharp, angular script bled into inky words on the thick paper as he spoke. Severus had charmed some of his rolls of parchment to respond to his voice and take down notes in his hand without a quill. It came in handy when one was deeply involved in some study or potion and did not wish to break away to write something down.
He looked over at Koenig after he had finished with a subtle gaze, eyes narrowed and watching her. He did not know anything about her or her family, which struck him as odd considering she was pureblood and his fellow Slytherins loved this particular topic of discussion.
Severus had never been interested in all the politics that bloodlines seemed to ignite, but was not naive of the underhanded jabs sent his way about his own parentage. He was not the only halfblood in Slytherin however, but he was the halfblood who had been involved with the inner ring. And that was somewhat of an oddity.
The long haired boy set aside his things and tightened his grip on his wand again, "One hundred feet then?"
It was not a question.

It was actually a pleasant experience, once they tossed their egos aside and finally began to work like they meant it. She loved these types of things though honestly it was more exhilarating if there was a chance for injury. Not that Pandorah wanted to get hurt but the higher the chances the move alive she felt. Sometimes she would question herself on just why she felt that way and other times she just went with it. Sure there was an underlying reason for the thrill, especially if it involved someone else being hurt more, but to think about that would mean she thought she was less than perfect. She knew she wasn't but liked to maintain the illusion otherwise.
Her stance relaxed just enough that she could actually disengage from her fighting mindset and look at him when he spoke. Severus would have no idea just what that meant, it was a sign of respect from the tall Ravenclaw that she found his words important enough to want to listen to them. She stroked her wand with her thumb, pale eyes watching what he did. Ready and waiting to see if anything happened. Berserker, that was what her brother called her. She was the type that once in that state of mind she would go after any and everything unless taken out in some fashion. Of course she was not inclined to agree to such a silly notion.
Pandorah took a deep shuddering breath and tapped her wand against the side of her face while he made his notes. These things were necessary. Talk about having a contrary mind!
Her father would hate him. The idea filtered randomly into her mind as she looked him over. It had nothing to do with his looks, though he really could use newer clothes, perhaps a neater haircut. It was because of his bloodline. Her father was very strict on things like that and not happy that wizards were being polluted with muggle blood. Merlin forbid a muggle-born talk to him, it was almost sickening how reaction. She wasn't as negative as he was on it but she did take note of a persons parentage. Pandorah wanted to see how they acted and how well they did in school to see if there was an actual difference or not. So far...no.
“One hundred feet it is then.” Sighing at nothing in particular she backed up just enough, looking behind her to make sure there was no one in the way or that she wouldn't trip over anything. Once Severus was in place they went back at it again. Both of them with a serious look of concentration. They had been doing this for awhile and throwing about magic like this was tiresome. It would not be long before the both of them were sweating and panting from overworking themselves. Pandorah knew she was the type to do that and after having observed him before was pretty sure he was too.
They did this work for awhile. An assignment that was supposed to take a week or so. Knowing the both of them it would just take all day. Not much time for rest and not caring. They were workaholics or at least she was. His reasoning behind it was unknown to her except they both just wanted to get this over with.
Someone decided to get a little too close to what they were doing and of course accidents happen. A young Gryffindor, not paying attention, walked right between the two of them. Immediately the spell hit the girl and sent her flying. It was thankfully not a detrimental type, just something to do just what it did. Pan looked over to Severus, then laughed. For really, it was too funny watching the female get tossed away from them like paper in the wind. She wasn't hurt but would definitely be embarrassed.

An eyebrow arched, following the girl as she flew through the air and landed heavily a good fifty feet away from them. He heard Pandorah's throaty laughter and despite himself felt an amused kind of smirk pulling the corners of his lips upwards. "Idiot girl." He muttered, shaking his head, the expression still there.
And it was only an idiot who would walk between two wizards (or a wizard and a witch in this case) with their wands out, obviously in the middle of a duel. Severus did not have much hope for Gryffindor house if this was the kind of students they were getting.
The girl still hadn't moved, and Severus took a step forward, eyes narrowed and inspecting her. She didn't look hurt, and as he got closer she looked up, eyes widening with something akin to fear and jumped to her feet, running off toward the castle.
He snorted and stared after her, returning back to Pandorah. Once he had reached her however a group of fith year Gryffindor boys were approaching them. They looked up to angry, even though their was something in their tense body language that spoke of unease.
"You hit Dickenson with that curse on purpose!." The leader of the group said, looking at Pandorah. He was a sandy haired boy with muddy brown eyes and an unfortunate face. Severus stared impassively at the group, dark eyes flicking towards Koenig to see what her reaction would be.

What she hadn't expected was for someone to actually take offense at what she had done. It wasn't her fault in the first place. The idiot girl had stepped in between them. Her and Severus had been at this for awhile, most people were smart enough to pay attention and not come close to them at all. She felt nothing for the girl but that smug sense of self satisfaction, she got what she deserved getting in the way. Pandorah watched idly as her partner somewhat inspected the fallen girl only th have her seemingly freak out, jump up and ran back toward the castle.
One brow raised up rather high as she spotted some Gryffindor boys coming closer. What could they want? Fully turning her tall frame toward them she gave them all of her attention, pale eyes looking bored as they began to speak to her. “Dickenson you say? Hmm good, now I know who to thank for messing up my project.” Her tone was harsh and unforgiving as she began to glare at the boys. “Even if it was on purpose just what would you do about it hmm? Going to say a bunch of ineffectual words at me? Complain about how unfair life is? Run and tattle to a teacher?” The more she spoke the nastier her voice was and she took a step or two toward them.
One of the boys didn't seem all that comfortable anymore but wasn't going to leave his friends just standing there. Instead he stepped a little off to the side and kept his eyes on Snape, you never knew when someone would jump to defend another and it was better safe than sorry. He was not being a coward, not at all.
“Or, do you actually have the courage...the balls, to do something about it?” She was playing with her wand as it was still in her hand and began to point it at each one of them in turn as she spoke, threatening in her manner but not with words.
